Nick Margetic Wins $2,000 Scholarship for his Public Service Announcement on the Dangers of Texting while Driving

Avondale School District, an achievement-oriented learning community focused on student leadership and success in academics, the arts and athletics, is pleased to announce that Rochester Hills resident Nick Margetic, a senior at Avondale High School, has earned a $2,000 scholarship for his second place finish in the Think B4 U Text contest.

Sponsored by the Detroit Area Honda Dealer Association and Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation, the contest encouraged teens to conceptualize and create their own video message about the dangers of texting while driving and how they would prevent their peers from doing so in the future. Nick created his public service announcement (PSA) as part of an assignment for Avondale High School’s Broadcast Journalism Club.

Avondale High School Principal Michelle Imbrunone complimented Nick on his overall creativity.

“We are so proud of Nick’s accomplishments. His creativity never ceases to amaze me and the videos he has done for the high school community are outstanding. This opportunity to complete a public service announcement is also an example of how partnering with our business community allows students to thrive.”

The site also has a place for teens to sign an online pledge to never text and drive, and connect with other high school students through monitored online forums to discuss and share their stories and feelings on this topic. Think B4 U Text is an initiative to educate Detroit area teenagers about the importance of safety while driving. Distracted driving can be deadly, especially to new and inexperienced drivers. Because of this, the Detroit Area Honda Dealer Association has teamed with the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation to create the ‘Think B4 U Text’ campaign to help keep Detroit teens and drivers safe on the road.
