Country Day Wins 10th, 4-1 Over Walled Lake Northern
Country Day picked up its 10th win of the season, defeating Walled Lake Northern 4-1 Friday night at Southfield Sports Arena.
"It was a good team effort tonight," said Country Day coach Frank Novock. "Alot of guys played. We got a lot of contributions from different guys."
"We tried to get everyone involved to get ready for the second half of the season."
Northern started out strong. With the game scoreless in the first period, the Knights had two great scoring chances stopped by Country Day junior goalie Chris Cantrell.
"Chris Cantrell made a couple of big saves two to three minutes into the game," said Coach Novock. "I think it may have been a different story if we had gotten on our heels and he didn't make those saves."
Country Day bounced back, scoring the first goal when senior Captain Sebastian Stankiewicz circled behind the Northern net and found Zach Bensinger all alone in front. Bensinger blasted a shot past Knights' goalie Grant Luzynski for a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game. Thirty-four seconds later, Country Day found the back of the net again. Stankiewicz led a rush down the ice, and got the puck to Bensinger in front. Bensinger's shot was stopped, and the rebound came out to Stankiewicz at the right side of the net. Stankiewicz's shot was also blocked, but the rebound bounced out to Jack Bergmann, who was on the left side and had a wide open net. Bergmann didn't miss, putting the Yellowjackets up 2-0.
Country Day scored its third goal of the first period, when Paul Johnson-- deep in his defensive end-- found Zach Bensinger at center ice. Bensinger skated around the Knight defense, crossed in front of the net, then blasted the puck in. Toby Murray picked up his third assist of the period on the goal.
"We were real good in the first period," said Novock. "Once we got our feet going, we got pucks in and deep, and made their defense turn, we were real effective."
Country Day picked up the only goal of the second period on a power play. Jack Bergmann and Jack Mettler got the puck to Sebastian Stankiewitz in front, who blistered a shot into the upper right corner of the net for a 4-0 Country Day lead.
Walled Lake Northern ended Cantrell's shutout bid with a power play goal with nine minutes left in the game. Austin Sansom scored from Eric Woolf and Joe Rozek.
"It was a good win, a good way to end the first half of the season," said Coach Novock. With the win, Country Day improved its record to 10-1-1. Northern dropped to 4-5.
