Country Day Wins Seventh Game 5-1 over Grosse Ile
Country Day got three goals in the first period, and two more late in the third as they recorded their seventh win of the season Wednesday night at Kennedy Recreational Center, a 5-1 win over Grosse Ile.
"It was a good start for us, but we seemed a little lax in the second period," said Country Day Coach Frank Novock. "We were able to go in spurts, but it was still not a complete sixty minute effort."
Senior Co-Captain Sebastian Stankiewicz got the hat trick for the Yellowjackets, and with his two assists, was involved in all the Country Day goals.
Stankiewicz started the scoring just over a minute into the game. Zach Bensinger and Stankiewicz fought for the puck in the corner to the right of the Grosse Ile goal. Jake Hartje grabbed the loose puck and moved it toward the goal, but his backhand shot was stopped. Stankiewicz picked up the rebound and blasted it in for a 1-0 Country Day lead.
Grosse Ile came right back less than two minutes later with a goal by Luke Moma, assisted by Garrett Jakunskas and Zach Kubiak. The Yellowjackets responded quickly. Hartje got the puck to Stankiewicz in front. Sebastian's shot was stopped, but Zach Bensinger put the rebound in for a 2-1 advantage at 5:02 of the period. Stankiewicz completed the scoring in the period when he rifled a shot in, after getting the puck from Hartje, allowing Country Day to go into the locker room with a 3-1 lead.
The second period was scoreless.
Country Day scored the final two goals within 18 seconds deep into the third period. Sebastian Stankiewicz got his third goal of the night at 13:33, assisted by Matt Hobbs. Hobbs then scored from Stankiewicz and Bensinger at 13:51 to put Country Day up 5-1.
"We have to continue to get better at doing the simple things, getting shots on goal, finishing checks, getting pucks in deep," said Novock. "That's the stuff that is going to pay off for us."
"Hopefully down the road, we will be a little more solid for sixty minutes, not just four or five minutes in spurts each period," he said. "We'll get ready for St. Mary CC on Saturday and hopefully have a complete effort."
Chris Cantrell got the win in goal for the Yellowjackets, whose record improved to 7-0-1.
