Mechatronics, a new Oakland Community College credit technical program designed to train technicians in the multiple skills required in advanced manufacturing begins in September.

OCC’s Economic & Workforce Development (EWD) and Engineering, Manufacturing and Technological Sciences departments have listened to their partners in business and industry who have expressed the need for multi-skill training.  In response to that unmet need, this program has been designed to fill skill gaps for new and incumbent workers.

Mechatronics – Integrated Skills for Advanced Manufacturing – begins with a series of core courses equaling 35 credits, or 570 classroom hours.  Topics such as geo-algebra, industrial safety, mechanical gears and linkages, computer assisted design, applied electricity, problem solving, robotics and fluid power are covered in the core sessions. Classes are completed in five two-month components each including two to three classes, and finishing in June 2013.

Students will then be able to specialize in one of three tracks – Mechatronics & Controls (five classes – 16 credits), Fabrication & Welding (four classes – 12 credits), or Robotics & Automation (three classes – 12 credits).  Opportunities to gain supervised work experiences are part of the program.  Students may choose a customized internship, or employers may choose to develop an apprenticeship program.

Students will learn in labs filled with state-of-the-art industrial equipment such as full-size Fanuc robots, Hass CNC machines and much more.  In addition, labs are supplemented with Amatrol hands-on mechanical simulators, as well as virtual simulation equipment.

All credits can be applied toward a technological sciences or general studies associate degree at OCC.

The Auburn Hills Campus is located at 2900 Featherstone Road, one mile east of the Pontiac Silverdome.  Free parking is available in campus lots near the Student Center.
