Penalty Kill Picks Up Country Day in 5-0 Win Over Saline

Half way through the Country Day hockey game against Saline Friday night, it was scoreless, and Country Day faced a five on three Saline advantage. The Yellowjackets then went on to kill four minutes of power play, over two and a half minutes of five on three, before breaking through to secure a 5-0 win.

"At one point, we had four guys, four key guys in the box at one time," said Country Day coach Frank Novock.  "We were able to kill that off and built huge momentum on that."

"When you don't score on a five on three, most times you don't come out on the right side of the stick," he said.

Yellowjacket junior goalie Chris Cantrell came through during the penalty kills.  "Chris made some timely saves for us and that was big," said Novock.

After the big penalty kills, Country Day scored two goals in the waning minutes of the second period.  Both goals were set up by junior defenseman Shane Switzer.  Switzer took a pass from Robert Kuhn at center ice, broke in over the blue line, and left a nice pass for Jake Hartje.  Hartje cut across the front of the net, then blasted a low hard shot into the lower corner to put Country Day up 1-0. With only 34 seconds left in the period, Switzer collected a pass from Kai Gerster and found Toby Murray all alone at the corner of the net.  Murray made no mistake about it, rifling the puck in the goal to stake Country Day to a 2-0 lead going into the locker room.

In the third period, Country Day added three more.  Eight minutes into the period, Zach Bensinger left a perfect pass for Sebastian Stankiewicz in front of the net, and Stankiewicz buried it. Stankiewicz scored his second goal of the night when he converted another pass, this time from Hartje for a 4-0 lead. Hartje completed the scoring on a pretty play stickhandling in, faking the goalie and putting the puck in low into the corner of the net.

Although Country Day outshot Saline at the start of the game, they had trouble getting the puck in the net.  "We didn't start as sharp as we'd like to, but  their goalie made some nice saves," said Novock. Country Day pounded 38 shots on Saline goalie Chris Kreuger in the game.  Chris Cantrell made sixteen saves to register his first shutout of the season for the Yellowjackets, now 2-0.
