Here's what you need to know about going on in and around the Bloomfield area this week.
Banks, schools closed for Martin Luther King Day
While schools and the banks are closed Monday for the holiday, some places remain open, such as the Cranbrook Institute of Science, the Baldwin Public Library, The Community House, and more. For a full list of closings, check out What's Open, Closed on Martin Luther King Day.
BHSD Town Hall
The Bloomfield Hills Schools begin a series of town hall meetings throughout the community to inform the public about plans to consolidate Andover and Lahser High Schools by 2013. The first event is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. at the Doyle Center for Professional Development, 7273 Wing Lake Road. Superintendent Rob Glass said he, members of the school board, key administration staff and the designers will be available for questions and to get feedback as the plans are to be finalized in February.

Elmore Leonard and Peter Leonard release event Thursday
Famed local author Elmore Leonard and his son and fellow writer Peter Leonard will celebrate the releases of their latest books at Baldwin Public Library at 7 p.m. Thursday. The event is co-sponsored by The Book Beat bookstore.
Bloomfield Hills School Board meeting
The Bloomfield Hills Schools Board of Education will have its first meeting of 2012 at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 at the Doyle Center for Professional Development, 7273 Wing Lake Road. The meeting agenda was not posted on the district's website by Sunday night, however, it can typically be found here early in the week. Check back Thursday for an agenda preview.
Detroit Tigers winter caravan comes to Birmingham
The Detroit Tigers winter caravan will stop at Birmingham's Palladium 12 Theater at 3 p.m. Thursday. The first 200 guests will receive a free hot dog, Pepsi, and movie pass, compliments of Uptown Entertainment. Admission is free though this is a non-autograph event.
