Andover Wrestler Takes Eighth Place at State Wrestling Finals

Senior Brody Wagerson finishes career with medal for the Barons; Brother Rice ends tournament on a high note.

AUBURN HILLS - Day three of the MHSAA individual state wrestling finals was somewhere in the middle for Brother Rice.

It wasn’t perfect like the first day, but it wasn’t as frustrating as day two.

Sophomore Shon Powell and junior Thomas Giradot bounced back after losses in the quarterfinals to reach all-state status.

Powell finished in third place in the 160 pound weight class. Giradot finished in sixth place in the 145 pound weight class.

The only Warriors' wrestler who didn’t end up getting a medal was Andrew Napieraj in the 135 pound weight class. The junior lost both of his matches on Friday and was eliminated. A close 8-7 decision to Noah Cantara ended his tournament run.

Wagerson Grabs Eighth Place

A point or two goes Brody Wagerson’s way he might not have had to settle for eighth place in the Division 2 215 pound weight class.

The Andover senior lost 4-2 in the opening round of the tournament to Charlotte’s Patrick Eldred. Patrick needed overtime to put Wagerson away.

Wagerson clearly didn't want to go home Friday morning. He blitzed Greenville's Carter Magirl in their consolation match. He scored two takedowns in the first round on his way to a 10-2 win. He was in total control of Magirl and was never in any real trouble.

He won his second match of the day, Lapeer East junior Joe Perry on a 5-0 decision.

On Saturday, he couldn’t catch a break. He lost to Stevensville Lakeshore’s Kyle Spear on a 6-4 decision. Warren Woods Tower’s Josh White beat Wagerson in overtime 5-3 in their seventh place consolation finals.
