Earth Angels Strut Their Stuff Along Woodward

Diners and cruisers take a ride back with these youngsters who know the era's music.

It wasn’t just the cars that took people back more than six decades as Woodward Dream Cruise events officially kicked off Friday evening.

Diners at Little Daddy’s in Bloomfield Hills and the Dream Cruise gawkers along Woodward Avenue were treated to two live performances by Earth Angels. The dance troupe, comprised of artists ranging in age from 9 to 18 from around Metro Detroit, delighted the crowd gathered just south of Long Lake Road with performances to  vintage music from the 1950s and 1960s.

“This was a total surprise and it was a great performance,” said Joan Cowell of Waterford, who was out to dinner with her mom when the kids in poodle skirts and “greaser” costumes took over the front parking lot. “It definitely takes you back.”

Formed in 1986, the troupe has bridged generations by fusing the carefree spirit of the '50s with crisp, modern dance moves and routines that get the audience involved.

The troupe performed two dozen routines between two sets and paid homage to artists like the Temptations, the Tokens and the Grease and Blues Brothers films.

Of their 17 performances booked for the summer – their busiest season – nothing compares to the Dream Cruise, said founder Lisa Campos-DeWitt.

“It’s the highlight of the summer because they get to perform for people that love to see us and want to see the cars,” she said.

Sponsored by Chevrolet, they will perform on WXYZ-Channel 7's Dream Cruise show live from the Phoenix Center in Pontiac at 7 p.m. tonight. A 3:30 p.m. show is also scheduled. Visit their website for more information.
