New And Improved Cranbrook Art Museum Dazzles on Opening Night
After a $22 million facelift and expansion effort, Cranbrook Art Museum takes its place among the finest collections of modern art and design in the country.
Cranbrook Art Museum was filled with excited patrons and art lovers Friday evening, as its first exhibit titled "No Object Is An Island: New Dialogues With The Cranbrook Collection" opened to the public.
Curators selected 50 pieces of art from the museum's collections of art and design, and invited 50 contemporary artists to create their own art in reaction to them. The results are stunning and unexpected, and the mediums range from the traditional to the unique and high-tech.
Included in the renovations is a new 20,000-square-foot wing that houses a seminar room, new state of the art vault, print study room, print storage room and ceramic storage. Pull out racks display Cranbrook's extensive collection of art, including a rare, four-panel painting by Roy Lichtenstein and a portrait of legendary soccer player Pele by Andy Warhol.
