OPINION: High School Merger Momentum Shows at Challenge Day
Excitement for the new Bloomfield Hills High School is growing, and the Nov. 6 Election is critical for it to become a reality.
Last Thursday I volunteered at the freshman Challenge Day event at Andover High School. Freshman from both Lahser and Andover participated. According to www.challengeday.org, their mission is, "to provide youth and community with experiential workshops and programs that demonstrate the possibilities of love and connection through the celebration of diversity, truth and full expression."
It is a powerful event, to say the least, and brings up many emotions. Throughout the day, over and over again, I was struck by how excited the kids were to be together as one. The energy of the united group was palpable. Even the teen facilitators, who were upperclassmen, expressed excitement for the upcoming merger of Lahser and Andover as Bloomfield Hills High School.
Freshman Challenge Day is just one example of the many activities that are already taking place to transition this district community from two high school populations to one. The upcoming Bloomfield Hills School Board election is critical in making this new high school a reality. Incumbent Ingrid Day and newcomer Howard Baron are the best choices for the two open six-year terms.
Ingrid's experience and knowledge of our district are essential, as is Howard's fiscal responsibility. Our community came together last May 8th to approve the construction of one unified high school facility. The students are excited, much of the community at-large is excited. Let's keep the momentum going and elect Ingrid Day and Howard Baron to the Bloomfield Hills School Board on November 6th.

Gee Julie, I was enjoying reading about Challenge Day until you deftly twisted it into a campaign endorsement. If the day was about " love and connection" .....I didn't feel either because I never had the chance to participate as a volunteer......as you did. why are volunteer and participation opportunities so limited to a select few ? You did say that the day was about the community? Didn't you? Well, I am community so where was my invite to participate? I'd like to know if as a candidate Mr. Baron was given a "special imitation"?

The future Black Hawks in this house are looking forward to Bloomfield Hills High School. Our family has had a good experience with the transitions in the district, and feel confident this next one will also be successful for our kids. Our staff has been amazing.

Ok we get it you like Day. Go write a blog and don't muddle up an article about school events with politics.

Julie: As a parent with three in middle school I also see excitement in the younger children and families for the merger. They are excited to think of the possibilities to come. We all know change can be hard but our current administration and board members have shown that they are listening to the community. They have taken a comprehensive and systematic approach to solving monumental challenges such as; declining enrolment and declining funding, while preserving opportunities and educational outcomes for the students. I agree that we need to retain or elect members to the school board that have demonstrated the qualities we teach our children; respect for each other, the ability to listen to others, and the ability to make logical and rational decisions.

Mr. Moigis seems to be a Greenwell/Fellin person. Based on their efforts and actions that would it would be really hard to vote for someone they would advocate. It's not an automatic disqualifier but it would take some serious explaining why you would be against the bond issue.

Neal,
He is a very nice person. We attend the same church. I am sure he will express his opinions on the High School as well as other issues at the LoWV event next Tuesday. I look forward to hearing them.

That's great that there is excitement in the air. However, practical concerns must be addressed by the adults. Parking and traffic congestion and danger to the students in a hurry to get to and from school each day, the inability of nearby residents to get in and out of their driveways is already a concern. That neighborhood group is meeting with the district regularly. The new high school project is already in danger of being over budget. To protect taxpayer interests, it is very important that Board members not rubber stamp every decision. Rigorous discussion and debate over financially prudent, responsible, and on time decisions should include a Trustee that may not always vote with the majority. It is healthy, people, to have disagreement in a pursuit so important. Jenny Greenwell would be an excellent choice for the two year Board spot. She is a creative thinker and has served on the BHSD Board before. Vote for Jenny on November 6 as a voice representing the financially conservative in the district. In the true interests of our schools, don't be afraid to listen to someone who has a different voice. Somone outside of the clique is healthy.

The "clique" is 20/20. Jenny Greenwell was on the board for one year; subsequently, voters rejected her three times. The current Board comes from a variety of backgrounds. They surely don't agree on all fronts, or two incumbents would not be opposing each other.
Please explain why the project is "already in danger of going over budget." Do you have numbers?

Cara, I want to be sure I understand your words. You say that the "disagreement" Jenny Greenwell will bring to the board for two years would be excellent in the "pursuit" of the new high school. Explain why a candidate who plans to bring disagreement to the board and has a track record of doing exactly that, is healthy for any reason. Board members are expected to investigate, study, learn and vote on behalf of our students and community. Educated voters should not vote for someone that has repeatedly been a "no," seemingly no matter the issue.

I agree with rigorous discussion and debate, and at times we all disagree. What I have seen from Jenny and those of B2020 is disagreement for disagreement sake. In my eyes she has said NO to everything. I think Jenny would continue this if elected to the school board. That is why I am saying no to her on November 6th.

Cara: Do you have children in BHSD schools? I wonder because all of Jenny Greenwell's ardent supporters (Chris, Barr, Linda P/Ulrey, Marcia) don't have children in BHSD schools. Chris alleged that many of her supporters did but they were afraid to go public for fear of intimidation. Chris has used this tactic in the past when he's caught with no facts to support his allegations. So...do you have kids in school or not?
By no means should only families with children in the schools have a voice but it's more than a little scary that there aren't families with children in school willing to support her "candidacy." It's a very telling statement. You may be the exception, it would be good to know.

Chris, you seem very selective in which anecdotes and input you base your opinions on, and which you argue with. Your view, and Jenny's, seem to be heavily colored by you own (presumably bad) expereiences.

The above writer seems to imply that anyone without kids in BHSD schools should be disenfranchised, or their opinions don't count or for that matter they don't have a right to an opinion unless of course it rubber stamps his. Let's see, guess that eliminates the large percentage of parents who choose other than BHSD, seniors, singles, families without children, committed couples, business owners in the BHSD.......all who pay generous taxes to this same BHSD but who, per the above writer aren't entitled to an opinion on the same. Gee, in a BHSD community of nearly 50,000 taxpayers he wants to stifle and silence opinion and grant voice only to those he thinks are worthy to comment. Your tax dollars he wants but nothing else. Reminds me of the old adage, "don't show up, pay up and shut up".
Sorry, NC ain't gonna happen.

Read the second paragraph of my post Linda. By the way, what did Cranbrook say when you suggested Jenny Greenwell may be suitable for their board?
You pay taxes whether your children go to public school or not, no question. That doesn't give you the right to bash, bash, and try to starve the schools to keep your taxes down. Your vitriol has become your identity within the community.

Our latest ACT test scores indicate that we do better than the Oakland County and the state scores - and have done so for 5 years.
However they also indicate that we are failing when it comes to Math and Science - where our scores are in the +/- 50% range. I don't know how you feel about this fact but as far as I am concerned, I would have a serious conversation with the people who have been in charge of this situation ASAP.
While I have a number of items that have brought me to this fray, I also look forward to introducing myself to the residents of our communities - where I have lived for over thirty years. All three of our children attended Bloomfield Hills schools.
My wife and three children can testify to this.

Mr. Moigis,
As a matter of curiosity, when was the last time you took an ACT?
I am tired of hearing how the schools are failing our children based the scores that are a snap shot of the students. They by no means measure actual knowledge and ability.
Thank you.

It's been a few days since Vic was asked to back up the assertion that the district is failing with math and science. Since then he posted a campaign blog but seems not to want to answer a very important question. This would seem to disqualify him from consideration as a board member. A failing grade would seem to be in order.

Would you please substantiate your comment that we are "failing when it comes to Math and Science?" What is passing vs. failing quantatively? What are the scores, at which grade levels? I don't know that you're wrong but it's a strong statement that implies our schools and administration are not doing their job. We are reputed to be a top district, this contradicts the reputation. Please post specifics. Thank you.

Mr. Moigis, you will find If you post to this discussion stream that once you question the current board policy you can do no right by several posters to this site. It doesn't matter if you make sense....If you recommend some new idea or critique the board....you are the devil....welcome to their game.

Linda: I'm glad you think you can set the agenda but if a candidate makes an assertion it is totally reasonable to ask he or she to back it up. This is not a new idea--it was a statement. Is it fact or false. Your imperiousness and dislike for people who question you or those you agree with ill serves you and the community. For all we know Mr. Moigis may be totally correct. Let's give him the chance--he's entitled to that.
