OPINION: Why The Blocked Comments?
Bloggers, particularly candidates for public office, shouldn't block feedback when they post.
Recently, a few people have posted blogs on Bloomfield Patch that don’t allow for comments. Since two of these people are candidates for public office, I think that shouldn’t be allowed. The content of their blogs aren’t at issue, but the process where a candidate can post their agenda and block feedback is antithetical to a blog.
I urge you to either require bloggers (or at least candidates for public office) to have their blogs open to comment or not allow those blogs to be posted. I understand this is an on line publication with different rules than conventional print newspapers but I really don’t believe this practice is acceptable either way.

Neal, I would argue the content should also be at issue when it is flatly false. For example: "Yet, the BHSD has...1 FTE to every enrolled student." There is no evidence that the BHSD has 5500 employees, and comments that might provide that correction are disallowed. As long as The Patch is disseminating falsehood under its banner, it can't have any credibility as a source of community information.

Ann, I agree but I wanted to highlight the new practice by Ms Greenwell and others where they were able to "hit and run" making comments and accusations without the ability of others to refut their statements. In my view this practice is cowardice.

Dear Marcia. I do have to point out who you are promoting. Jenny Greenwell has not been honest about her intentions. For example, the School Farm.
I posted on her article a comment suggesting she wants to sell the farm. She responded.

The farm property is on the extreme northeast corner of the district, and can easily be accessed from I-75 at the Adams Road interchange. What a fantastic spot for a gas station and a Subway. Perhaps some savvy local developer will offer the BHSD a few million dollars for just part of it!
Has anyone considered the value of developing the portion of the property that is adjacent to I-75? A Tim Horton's would be a virtual gold-mine. Bloomfield Township would benefit from commercial property taxes. A win-win!

The comments by Jenny Greenwell that you posted do not say she is going to sell the ENTIRE farm. She suggests that out of all the acreage at the farm, there is land near the I-75/Adams Rd. interchange that could be valuable to a business that would benefit from the location. Selling a small portion of the farm would generate income without affecting the programs currently there. A good idea worthy of discussion on a school Board agenda or study session.
As a side note: there is already an agreement between the school district and the Township of Bloomfield to sell/buy approx. 6 + acres that have the historical buildings and the school.....when and IF the school wants to sell. The Township is OBLIGATED to buy that section of land and buildings. I made this information available to the Community Partnership meeting...and sent the corresponding documentation to Charlie Fleetham.
I do know who I am promoting: Jenny Greenwell. She has good ideas that are worthy of discussion at the board table and she is genuinely concerned about the education of children. Vote for Jenny.

Marcia: Do you have any comment on the content of the Letter to the Editor or are you just posting your support for Ms. Greenwell on as many places as possible? Do you think her blocking comments on her blog speaks well to her as a potential board member? I doubt most people will think so.

The candidate who is consistent in her beliefs, but then can't remember what they are (see school farm).
The candidate who is so concerned about the welfare of the students, but wasn't concerned about their physical safety (see football fields).
Jenny Greenwell is the candidate who claims other's professional degrees as her own (see Don Greenwell, VP).
The candidate who judges our students based on a report she didn't read and if she did then she didn't understand it (see 21% needing remedial classes in college).
The candidate who can't add two numbers together (see her high school qualifications).
The candidate who's latest claim is that the school district has one employee for every student.
The candidate who voted against the new high school not because she felt it was a bad idea, but “on the principle” of it.
The candidate who feels that she isn’t heard, but refuses to participate in Community Partnership meetings “because no one will listen”.
Is this the candidate you are voting for Marcia?

Ms. Greenwell has posted another accusatory blog, without opportunity to comment. It is cowardly and certainly not of a caliber of someone deserving to be on the Board. Read it for yourself and you'll probably also come to the conclusion she would be an awful choice.

I would like to publicly thank Jenny Greenwell for subjecting herself to the trials and tribulations of running for public service. Clearly, one must have very thick skin to run for the Board of Trustees of Bloomfield Hills Schools. Will you join me and Vote for Jenny Greenwell on November 2nd?

Shame you can't do that on her blog. Does anyone else find it ironic that Ms. Greenwell says the Board has too much "one way" communication, and doesn't listen enough, when she is the sole Patch blogger to disallow comments? That doesn't bode well for her willingness to listen to the public should she sit on the Board.

Another partial name or pseudonym. Someone might be using a baby naming suggestion book. Actually it's the rest of the candidates and community that need to have a thick skin from the diatribes that get posted by Ms. Greenwell. Ms. Greenwell's blog was particularly strong in her accusations and contradictions. It's not surprising she would take the cowardly approach on comments.

Neal, I guess you have provided the comment section for Ms. Greenwell's blogs. Since that is the case: today she says all that matters are academics.
Last week, she considered it a failing of the district not to have a football team at Andover:

"Andover has a very inadequate auditorium for its population of students. It's an awkward building, rather a hodge-podge of original building and additions."

Jenny is just so out there at this point. I believe she truly feels persecuted even though people are commenting on her words and posts. I'm sure a large part of this candidacy is ego driven, some revenge driven. Yes, she has been belittled but as my dad said when we were kids: "you make your own problems sometimes."

My support for Mrs. Greenwell rests on her tenacity. She champions her ideas in the face of outrageous criticisms even though her ideas have merit for discussion. Often when ones' ideas are met with compulsive criticism by a few it means you have touched the Achillea heel of their comfortable status quo. Vote for Jennifer Greenwell for the 2 year board seat, she is a candidate who is unafraid to discuss new ideas. A vote for Jennifer Greenwell is a vote for fiscal sanity. A vote for Jennifer Greenwell is the right vote for our district.
