UPDATED: Police Identify Teen Found Dead at Wing Lake
Bloomfield Township resident Oliver Smith, 18, was discovered by a fisherman Saturday. Police said he died of apparent overdose of K-2.
Bloomfield Township police believe that 18-year-old Oliver Smith died of an apparent drug overdose that is directly related to his smoking herbal essence, commonly referred to as Spice or K-2, according to a news release.
Smith's body was discovered by a fisherman Saturday morning along the shore of the lake, located east of Franklin Road and stretches to Wing Lake Road between Quarton and Maple.
Smith's official cause of death won't be determined until toxicology test results are complete, which could take a few weeks, Capt. Scott McCanham said Tuesday morning. However, the Oakland County Medical Examiner classified Smith's death as accidental following an autopsy Sunday.
McCanham said there is no reason to suspect foul play, but declined further comment Tuesday morning.
The tragedy is the latest incident where authorities say K-2, a synthetic drug that has effects similar to marijuana, yet is legal in Michigan, has played a role. The attorneys for Sandra Layne said her 17-year-old grandson, Jonathan Hoffman, may have been under the influence of K-2 and that she feared for her safety when she allegedly shot and killed him in their West Bloomfield condominium on May 18.
The drug may also have been in the system of Tucker Cipriano when the 19-year-old Farmington Hills resident and friend Mitchell Young, 20, allegedly beat several members of the Cipriano family, killing his father Bob Cipriano.
Oliver attended Andover High School and is the older brother of a current student at the school, according to an email sent to parents and community members Tuesday morning. Counselors are available to any student seeking help.
Visitation for Smith is 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd. (between 14 and 15 Mile roads) in Clawson. A funeral mass is scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Owen Catholic Church, 6869 Franklin Rd. in Bloomfield, according to the email.
