Last summer, a group of Beverly Elementary students led the Birmingham and Beverly Hills community in creating the official world's longest lemonade stand.

A new sculpture commemorating their efforts will be unveiled at Beverly Park at a special ceremony at 4 p.m. June 13.

Hundreds of students, parents, teachers and community members participated in the Aug. 20 event, in which 349 individual lemonade stands wound their way through Beverly Park on a hot summer afternoon. At 1,399 feet, the connected stands became the world's longest lemonade stand.

The event raised more than $50,000, with $36,000 of that going directly back to Birmingham Public Schools and various other community organizations, including the Birmingham Education Foundation and Detroit Public Schools, according to Patrick Liebler, a Beverly parent and organizer of the event.

At the event next week, organizers will unveil the eight-foot sculpture, which blends steel with glass in an upswept form and was designed by Detroit Design Center.

The sculpture will commemorate last summer's event but also, according to Liebler, "it is hoped that the sculpture can become an inspirational focal point at the park and within the broader community."

Also at the event, organizers will update students and parents on the status of the Guinness World Record, Liebler said.
