The Week Ahead: Bloomfield Hills Swimmers To Compete At Oakland County Championships
Andover and Lahser students will be in the pool at Lake Orion on Friday and Saturday.
Andover and Lahser
The diving events start at 6 p.m. Friday and the swimming events are scheduled for Saturday morning. The top six individuals and top three relay teams will get awards for each of the events.
Swimmers and divers had to qualify for the event by meeting certain times (scores) in competition this season.
Andover sophomore Sarah Kilbride, a returning state qualifier, will swim in the 200-meter IM and the 100-meter breaststroke. The Barons will also have four divers competing.
The school will learn Wednesday afternoon if any other swimmers qualified. All races will have 40 participants and if there weren’t enough qualifiers, the next best times are considered. Head Coach David Zulkiewski said he hopes a couple of his relay teams make the cut.
The Lahser varsity football team will try to stop its 2-game losing streak this Friday when it hosts Warren Fitzgerald at 7 p.m.
Head coach Dan Loria will be looking for his defense to get back on track after allowing 45 points to Berkley last week and 41 points to North Farmington two weeks ago.
The 86 points allowed in consecutive weeks is more than the defense gave up in the first three weeks of the season combined (34). Last year, the Knights were 2-7, but didn’t allow a team to score more than 40 points the entire season.
Fitzgerald beat Lahser 20-10 last season and made the playoffs at 7-4. This year the Spartans are struggling a bit at 2-3 and haven’t been nearly as good as they were defensively.
Andover’s losing streak is at seven games after its loss this week to Groves. The Barons haven’t won a game since week seven last year.
They will have a favorable matchup this week when they visit Ferndale at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles have one win this season and have had a very similar campaign to Andover’s. Three of Ferndale's four losses are by seven points or less and the squad has a smaller roster, like the Barons.
If Andover plays as it did against Groves and Avondale, it should pick up its first win of the season.
Brother Rice will work to help its legendary coach reach a major milestone Friday when it visits Orchard Lake St. Mary’s at 7 p.m. in a Catholic League Central matchup. Warriors Head Coach Al Fracassa, coach since 1969, will be looking for his 400th win.
His team will have to beat an Eaglets squad that is 4-1 and on a 3-game winning streak. The Warrior offense has been on a roll, scoring more than 30 points in three straight games and more than 40 twice.
The Marian varsity volleyball team will host the Marian Invitational at 8 a.m. Saturday. Teams from Seaholm, Troy Athens, Troy, Bedford, West Bloomfield, Clarkston and Lake Orion will compete.
Seaholm, Clarkston, Lake Orion and Marian are all top teams in the state that have the potential to go very far in the state tournament.
