Weekend Planner: Tween Iron Chef, Magic of Birmingham, and a Hanukkah Wonderland

Patch tells you what's happening this weekend in and around Bloomfield Hills.

It's the last weekend before Hanukkah and Christmas arrive, so it's time to get out there and enjoy all the activities in and around Bloomfield Hills. The month of December always brings a wide variety of events for you to enjoy.  All week long we have been counting down the days to help you plan your weekend with options of events to attend.

Here's a recap:

Tween Iron Chef Bloomfield

Where: Bloomfield Township Public Library

When: Saturday at 1 p.m.

Why go: Does your child remind you of the next Cat Cora, Michael Symon, or Bobby Flay? Are they wizards in the kitchen? If you think they have what it takes, then attend the Bloomfield Township Public Library's cool Iron Chef competition for tweens ages 8-12 on Saturday. Children will be able to battle it out in the kitchen to create the yummiest recipe from the "secret ingredient." The winner gets to take home bragging rights of being Iron Chef Bloomfield.

Make a Joyful Noise with the Birmingham Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra

Where:  Groves High School

When: Sunday at 7 p.m.

Why go: Join the Birmingham-Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra for one of the audience's favorite concerts of the year, the holiday concert full of warmth and wonder of the season. Enjoy Greensleeves and March of the Toys, selections from HookThe Skaters WaltzParade of the Wooden Soldiers and The Toy Trumpet. Plus for the first time ever, choirs from Groves High School and Seaholm High School will perform with the Symphony.

Magic of Birmingham

Where: N. Old Woodward Avenue & E. Maple Road, Birmingham

When: Saturday from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Why go: This weekend will be your last weekend to shop before Hanukkah and Christmas Eve.  Why not stroll the beautifully decorated streets of downtown Birmingham on Saturday and feel the magic of the holiday season about you? Enjoy live carolers near storefronts, hot cocoa, the Santa House or carriage rides. During the Magic of Birmingham, random shoppers will be given a red ornament which will have the name of a Birmingham business on it. Those lucky shoppers can take their ornament to the location and receive a special gift. Another lucky shopper will receive two airline tickets to anywhere in the U.S. It's a fun way to finish up your holiday shopping and, who knows? You may be one of the lucky 2,000 people to receive a special gift.

Hanukkah Wonderland

Where: Orchard Mall Shopping Center, West Bloomfield

When: Sunday from 12-6 p.m.

Why go: Bais Chabad Congregation is hosting a Hanukkah Wonderland on Sunday. Orchard Mall will be overrun with Judaic activities and entertainment that children of all ages will love.

At 11 a.m., women can enjoy a Caffeine for the Soul class with coffee and donuts. Families can enjoy an exciting line up of activities, foods and crafts all day long. The Wonderland features the world's largest dreidel shaped moonbounce, an opportunity to stuff a donut, an olive press demonstration, interactive Hanukkah game show, Hanukkah Lego land, design a Hanukkah t-shirt, and get your picture taken with Judah the Maccabee. There will also be a design your own Dreidel Magician show.

Caroling, Caroling: An Alfred Burt Family Christmas

Where: St. James Episcopal Church

When: 4 p.m. Sunday

Why Go: On Sunday, the combined choirs of St. James Episcopal Church and All Saints' Episcopal Church in Pontiac join forces to pay homage to the late Alfred Burt, who created fifteen Christmas Carols between 1942-1954. Burt studied music at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and became a renowned jazz musician through the 1940's and 50's. The choirs, a harpist, flutist, handbell ringers and junior choir will perform Burt's carols that have become known around the world.
