Why vote for me, W. F. (Vic) Moigis? Why am I running?
I have had the pleasure of raising three children in our school district as well as in other parts of the country and the world. This has provided me with an understanding of the the advantages as well as the shortcomings of the Bloomfield Hills Schools.
I have observed the following advantages:
- A very dedicated community that has seen fit to allocate very substantial financial resources towards their children’s education.
- Many classes at the High School level that are equivalent to many European and other international academic levels.
- Many dedicated teachers that have had our children’s best interest at their hearts.
- Many school buildings are would be the envy of the rest of the world.
By the same token, I have also noticed the following shortcomings:
- The K-12 curriculum is not designed to raise our children to those academic standards of nations that we are competing against today. We have a core curriculum that needs to be raised substantially.
- We have (at the High School level) an academic segment where students that are focused on a clear path to their future will do very well with the Advanced Placement courses. These courses are considered normal courses in most of the rest of the world. This leaves our children who do not take advantage of these courses at an immediate disadvantage vis-à-vis their future competitors.
- On the average, I see our H.S. diploma equivalent of a 10 grade “degree” outside of the United States. This needs to be addressed sooner than later.
- Those students graduating with a GPA of 4.2 to 4.5 certainly are competitive on a worldwide basis.
- Our schools have a serious drug problem and discipline problem. This situation has our administrators in a bind that they find difficult to address.
- I believe that we could and should rationalize our student to employee ratio (5.5 to 1) substantially.
- A sense of fiscal restraint should be introduced to our Board! I do not believe that we unlimited financial resources!
This is a partial list of reasons that I am running for BHS Board of Trustees and should I get elected, I will certainly use all of my managerial and academic background to help our students succeed in this difficult we already live in.

A little over a week ago Mr. Moigis said BHSD was failing on Math and Science tests. I asked if he would substantiate that assertion. Instead he has posted two self serving campaign blogs. That's certainly his right but as responsible voters when a candidate makes such strong claims and ignores a request for substantiation it would seem he fails as a genuine candidate.
FWIW: Chris Fellin is his his treasurer. Between his unsubstantiated assertions and his association with the failed B2020 crowd he would be no better for our children than Ms. Greenwell.
Either Mr. Baron or Ms. Day are eminently more qualified.

I would watch the candidate forum. Mr. Moigis struck me as a decent and civil man who very much believes what he says (Fellin/Greenwell/2020 endorsements and sign management aside -- something he should be more forthright about). Having read his posts and listened to him talk has been very helpful for me in one sense: I have a greater understanding for how some in the community, many seniors perhaps, must feel alienated from current school life, challenges, demands, etc. That is, what he offers in good faith here is as far from what an informed parent needs in a school board member right now as one could possibly imagine. But if he can, again, in good faith, put himself forward with this understanding of what a school board member needs or does these days (particularly in Michigan) there is, still, an enormous communication gap between the District and signficant parts of its community. That gap needs to be closed more quickly, both by the District and by electing board members who can speak to the concerns of people like Mr. Moigis and parents like me. I am appreciative of his willingness to run.

Mr. Charness,
My statement regarding the science and math was a direct result of the presentation I witnessed at the school board meeting where the test results in 5 areas were presented.
Both the math and science scores were I the 50 percentile range while the other 3 areas were in the 80 to 90 percentile range ( it could have been in the high seventies to 91 range mind you.)
I consider the math and science results a statistical failure.
How about you?
Sincerely,
W.F. Moigis (Vic)
P. S. I apologize for not having answered you question before today.

Was it the Merit Exam scores? Are you quoting the Michigan overall scores, which are 52% and 61% in math and science, or the Bloomfield Hills scores, which were 86% and 87% proficiency?

Which tests, please? I'd like to track down the scores so we're on the same page.

On MEAPs, Bloomfield Hills is 95.1% proficient:

I too am grateful for concerned citizens who put themselves out there and run for public office. It can't be easy these days.
That being said, and with all due respect to Mr. Moigis, I strongly feel he is the least qualified of the three candidates running for the 6 year board seat. I attended the LOWV forum and found Mr. Moigis to be completely out of touch with the current climate, needs and future vision of education in general and of the BHSD in specific.
Ingrid Day has been a strong leader for our district and staunch supporter of our students. Her financial acumen and knowledge are needed as we move forward with the building of our high school facility while remaining mindful of delivering the best education possible to ALL students. And Howard Baron has proven his mettle and desire by attending all/nearly all Community Partnership Meetings, and bringing himself up to speed as to what is required of a board member and public school advocate. At this critical juncture in our district and history, I strongly feel the students and our community as a whole would be much better served by re-electing Ingrid Day and electing Howard Baron to our school board. They can hit the ground running and help to propel our district forward!

Mr. Fellin,
While I too am extremely appreciative of those that step forward to run for public office, it is extremely important to me that the candidates really have the experiences and qualifications necessary to help them make tough decisions.
I also hope that you will understand that if Mr. Moigis is endorsed by your BTE PAC that many would no longer consider him independent.
Perhaps Mr. Moigis will take a look at the following and respond so that voters can make a more informed decision regarding Mr. Moigis' qualifications, experiences and beliefs.

Please don't construe my comment about Mr. Moigis not answering the request to substantiate his assertion as implying he is not a decent and civil man. I watched the forum as well and he did come across that way. But it is true he made a very serious assertion which he has not attempted to substantiate. That's a big issue. I do feel that, in watching the forum, he was clearly the least qualified of the candidates for that seat.
Regarding having Chris in the serious position as his treasurer he's made a very poor choice. After Chris' actions and statements I would not like having him in a position to have this close an influence on a board member.
In no way am I saying that Mr. Moigis is a bad person. Amy Cardin is spot on that it can't be easy to put yourself out to run for public office. I would be very reluctant to do it. He came across as the least qualified, he hasn't answered (what I think) is a very reasonable question, and he's made the choice of a person with serious anti board animus his treasurer. Both Ms. Day and Mr. Baron bring much more to the table.

Three questions for Mr. Moigis:
1. Where did you stand on the school bond? Strongly favor, favor, neutral, against or strongly against?
2. You suggest the employee to student ratio is unjustifiable (you also mentioned this at the LOWV forum). What would your target ratio be?
3. What specific curriculum changes would you advocate for?
Thanks for your time in answering.

As an addendum to question 2, exactly which in-building personnel should be eliminated to lower the employee to student ratio?

Salve Publius,
Quosque tandem abutere patient mea? I have answered your question before but here I go again.
1.- The schools should have been properly maintained and updated over the years. They were not. Result? We need A new school now ( not 2.) and we have to pay for it.........
2.- We should have a higher student-to-employe/ teacher ratio than we have now - probably in the 9 to 10 area.
3.- I would increase the core curriculum to 25+ and upgrade the present core subjects to make them compatible with international or the best national ones.
Kind regards,
Vic Moigis

Mr. Moigis,
Who would you cut in our school buildings? Which building staff is superfluous?
As a secondary question, who would you cut outside the buildings? Bus drivers? Food service? Which departments are too fat?

The community benefits when newcomers indicate an interest in serving as Mr. Moigis has done. I know many people found his insights at the forum refreshing. it's unfortunate that prior to vetting him out, the usual bunch of Debbie downers pile on and attempt to smother out all viable competition to their precious incumbents. My choices for board seats are two newcomers, Baron and Moigis. Mr. Baron seems to be quite receptive to hearing the issues of the B2020 group, and Mr. Moigis brings vast global educational and professional credentials. By contrast, Ms. Day, the eternal incumbent has the same tired agenda.

Howard Baron is not running on a slate with Mr. Moigis. They are not really comparable candidates. Please go to to www.howardbaron.com for more information.

Linda,
Asking Mr. Moigis questions isn't an "attempt to smother" competition. Please share with all how he is supposed to be "vetted" out if the various questions people have asked are going unanswered by him. What "vast global educational and professional credentials" does he actually have? Most people who have "vast global educational and professional credentials" can name them. They don't just allude to them which is all that Mr. Moigis has done.
His "insights" regarding education appeared limited to how the world functioned not how the world currently functions. Thanks but no thanks. This district needs trustees who don't want to take students back to the "dark ages". Most especially we need trustees who understand the meaning of the word comprehensive as well as what their responsibilities actually are as a school board member.

Would Linda (or other 2020 supporters) be willing to share the candidates "vast global and educational" credentials? It is possible Mr. Moigis is modest and would prefer a surrogate to deliver this information -- particularly to parents whose kids he says he would like to serve. As it stands it is really difficult to assess his background. In the past, as Ms. Berndt has pointed it out, it was enough that a school board member be a decent citizen of the community but the District's two main challenges -- high school construction and dealing with reforms from Lansing -- are considerable. Voters deserve a bit more information, I think. I believe S. Sera is a parent in the district (I am sorry if I am incorrect). If she can't get this kind of basic information....

Dear S Sera,
Please consider the possibility that I want to prepare our children with a solid education that will allow them to compete on an international scale!
I see our schools as trying to be everything for everybody and end up producing too many graduates that need too many remedial classes when they arrive at the university of their choice.
Back to the "Dark Ages?"
I hope that you can answer this epithet yourself now.
I do thank you for your comments though.

Mr. Moigis,
We are back to the remedial classes debate. Did you take the time to read any of the commentary here on the Patch regarding this topic? You will find it on the "Revolving-Door Superintendents…Why?" Blog. I would guess based on your repeat statement of too many graduates needing remedial classes that you didn't bother taking the time to read the commentary or the report it relates to. Is the level of work you would demonstrate if you were to be elected a trustee?

To his great credit Mr. Moigis posted this blog with opportunity for comment unlike Ms. Greenwell who has become the "hit and run" candidate. I do support the other two candidates but I also respect Mr. Moigis.

As I said I am encouraged that Baron has made numerous attempts to reach out and understand the issues of the critics of the numerous failed bond proposals; Mr. Moogis is an international businessman who brings a fresh perspective and despite vicious attacks by some Patch addicts has emerged as a man of genteel and professional character. Vote for Baron and Moigis. I think they would make a good team.
