Detroit Lions standouts lead a special training experience to celebrate the grand opening of their new business venture in Bloomfield Township.
Roughly 300 fitness enthusiasts got a first-hand experience of what it's like to train with the pros Tuesday as Detroit Lions Ndamukong Suh and Tony Scheffler kicked-off the opening of D1 Detroit. The football stars are part of local ownership group that has taken over a portion of the Bloomfield Tennis and Fitness Club on Bloomfield Township's north side and offers a new type of fitness experience to the area. "It's an opportunity for me to show the kids what I went through, the things I went through when I was younger," Suh told wxyz.com. "I started out in sports. I was fortunate enough to have a similar situation, not as advanced as D1 was, but it helped me get better." While a committed sales and marketing team has been promoting the…

If it were up to you, what would you like to see move into this spot in Bloomfield Township?
In April, we told you about the abrupt closure of the Bloomfield Township Big Boy Restaurant after more than 30 years of operation. William Van Horn, the representative for the Van Horn Real Estate, which owns the property, said the restaurant closed when the longtime operator decided to retire. Further details were not immediately available. Van Horn said he's received at least 150 telephone calls about the property, including many from upset customers that want their favorite breakfast spot to return. "I try to be nice to them and hope they understand," the former Bloomfield Township resident said by telephone Monday. "I know it was very popular, and for a few decades in 1980s and 1990s Big Boy was where a lot of business deals were …

Refreshing news for local home-sellers is in the latest look at sale prices for homes and condos in four Metro Detroit counties. Livingston County has the highest median ($150,000), followed by Oakland ($114,500), Macomb ($72,500) and "Greater Wayne," excluding Detroit ($62,000). Bloomfield Township's Joe Grimm and co-author Katherine Yung lead a guided bus tour Saturday across metropolitan Detroit, visiting Coney Island restaurants in conjunction with their new book 'Coney Detroit.'
A steady diet of hot dogs and history was served up Saturday afternoon as a group of about a dozen people embarked on the first-ever Patch Coney Detroit Bus Tour. Tour participants had a chance to travel across metropolitan Detroit tasting coney dogs and learning how the region has become the world’s coney capital. Led by Joe Grimm and Katherine Yung, authors of the book Coney Detroit, the tour bus left from downtown Detroit and along the way stopped at Joe’s Top Dog Coney Island in Dearborn, Athens Coney Island in Royal Oak and Western Coney Island in Eastpointe. At each spot, members of the tour received samples of coney dogs and had a chance to hear from each of the establishment’s owners about the history of their businesses. …

The golf course at the Bloomfield Hills country club has seen the likes of Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus since it opened more then 90 years ago.
The votes are in, and when it comes to hitting the links in the Birmingham, Bloomfield and West Bloomfield area, Patch voters are clear: the Oakland Hills Country Club is the best golf course in the area. Patch readers had a variety of golf courses to choose from in Readers' Choices: What's Your Favorite Golf Course in the Bloomfield, Birmingham Area?, from Birmingham's Lincoln Hills Golf Course to West Bloomfield's Bay Pointe Club. But with 33 percent, it was the Oakland Hills Country Club, located on West Maple Road just east of Telegraph, that was named Patch readers' favorite. Open since 1916, the golf course at the Oakland Hills Country Club has been used for numerous PGA events featuring legendary golfers including Arnold Palmer and …

Experts says to keep your mom’s favorite colors in mind when shopping.
If you’re one of the countless people who buy flowers for Mom on Mother’s Day, good for you … and great for Mom! There’s nothing like a big bouquet to brighten the day. Area gardening experts suggest taking Mom’s love of flowers a few steps further by picking up a plant for her that she can enjoy, perhaps as a centerpiece on Mother’s Day but then on her patio or deck as an added adornment this summer. And while plants in pots are great, so are blooms that brim from the new vertical, wall trays. Consider giving Mom gardening tools or even a big pile of mulch. Seriously, some mothers have reported that one of their best gifts ever was a pile of mulch and some extra hands for spreading it! Here, some plant- and garden-enthusiast gift ideas …

This minivan is a smart person's car. But am I ready for that?
Editor's note: This is the latest in a series. Read all of the Patch Drives installments here. Who says boring isn’t cool? OK, I said that, just a couple days ago. But after driving a Honda Odyssey I realized boring still isn’t cool, but smart is. And the Odyssey is a smart person’s car. This week I headed over to Honda Bloomfield to test drive an Odyssey. Here’s the thing: I know a few Honda people. You probably know Honda people, too. People who swear there is nothing better than a Honda. People that are practical. People that are serious. People that read the safety reports before shopping for a car. People that are, well, kind of boring. I like to think of myself as more of an edgy, fun, cool kind of chick (that’s why I drive a …
