The Aug. 7 Primary: Who's In?

No real surprises for Bloomfield-area voters as the filing deadline passes. Let the campaigning begin!

The Aug. 7 primary picture is much clearer following Tuesday's filing deadline for candidates wishing to appear on the ballot. There were no real surprises for Bloomfield-area residents. All seven members of the Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees, including all three full-time elected officials, will run unopposed. Barring major turnout for a write-in candidate, Tuesday's deadline all but secured a shot in November at four-year terms for Supervisor Leo Savoie and Trustee Corinne Khederian, who were appointed to their positions late last year. Candidates for school board positions will file to appear on the general election ballot later this year. Judicial candidates had to meet a May 1 filing deadline. Candidates may also pursue …

New, Official ID Card Recognizes Veterans for Military Service

Vets can now purchase a card from Oakland County.

John Heller has told his war story hundreds of times. As the last Michigan survivor of the USS Indianapolis, sunk by a Japanese submarine in World War II, Heller was honored to be one of the first to receive Oakland County's new veteran identification card. "I think (the ID card) is the greatest thing in the world," Heller, of Clawson, said Thursday. County officials hosted several veterans as officials unveiled the new card Thursday morning at a special ceremony at the Oakland County Board of Commissioners Auditorium where Heller, 84, led the Pledge of Allegiance and shared his story with guests. The event attracted about 75 veterans from across Oakland County, many of whom received their card after the ceremony. There are 73,000 veterans…

Mitt Romney's Cranbrook Antics Take Center Stage Again in Presidential Campaign

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee apologizes for some 'dumb things' while growing up in Bloomfield Hills.

In January, Bloomfield Patch explored the book that chronicled some of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's Bloomfield Hills roots and some of his mischievous pranks while attending Cranbrook . Some of those antics are again at the center of the presidential campaign today as the Washington Post published a story in which former classmates describe first-hand an incident when Romney forced down a fellow student and cut his hair. The story, which ran the day after President Barack Obama stated he supports gay marriage in a nationally televised interview, indicates the student was perpetually teased for being a non-conformer and presumed homosexual. Romney, a graduate of the Cranbrook Class of 1965, apologized today, telling Fox News' …

Third Time a Charm for BHS High School Consolidation Millage

Now the focus moves toward implementing the two-year transition plan for a unified Bloomfield Hills High School under one roof.

The Bloomfield Hills Schools and Superintendent Rob Glass asked voters for one last shot to resolve a decade-long community dispute over the future of the district's high schools, and they got it Tuesday. The proposal approving use of $59 million in public bonds passed by a 61 percent margin, according to election results from the Oakland County Elections Office. Now, the focus will be on implementing a two-year, multifaceted transition plan to use the bonds to house both Andover and Lahser high schools under one roof on the current Andover campus. "Now we have to execute," Glass acknowledged amid the fervor of district supporters and volunteers celebrating the victory Tuesday evening at the Ultimate Soccer in Pontiac. "We've heard …

I know the sense of loss and disbelief when the bond issue was defeated in 2010 by a combination of an ill planned measure and a coalition of people with antipathy towards the board/district due to personal agendas along with voters who are simply anti-tax. It is hard for those folks to deal with the repudiation of that coalition by the community--they were able to block progress for years and …   more ›

Critical Questions About the BHS High School Vote

Nearly a decade of often heated debate will culminate today in what the Bloomfield Hills Schools says will be the final vote on the high school dilemma.

Pass or fail, today's vote will mark the beginning of a new era in Bloomfield Hills Schools history. Here's a last-minute primer for those heading to the polls. For previous coverage, visit the Bloomfield Hills Schools High School Consolidation Millage Topic Page. The district plan calls for roughly $79 million to merge the high schools under one roof. Voters are being asked to approve $58.6 million in bonds (1.16 mills) to make it happen. The owner of a home with a taxable value of $250,000 is expected to pay $290 annually; and the owner of a home with a taxable value of $150,000 is expected to pay $174 annually. The district's existing bond debt, however, is set to decrease in 2014 due to a reduction in Sinking Fund millages approved …

As a student that attended Andover 7 years ago, I can tell you this is a great plan. At that time the roof was caving in and dumpsters collected rain water and snow melt in the hallways. The schools are completely outdated, and in no way could compete with other schools in the area. Not to mention, Lahser was (and I assume still is) sinking 1/4 inch every year. Are these the type of environments …   more ›

Local Democrats Slam House Republican Education Funding Bill

Representatives say the state should restore nearly $1 billion cut last year from K-12 funding.

A group of Michigan House Democrats gathered in Southfield this morning to level charges that Republican lawmakers and Republican Gov. Rick Snyder are leaving school children behind when it comes to funding education.  During a press conference held at University Academy, a school for gifted and talented students on the Southfield High campus, lawmakers said the proposed budget continues a $470 per pupil funding cut currently in place. What's more, they said, the omnibus legislation lacks transparency and makes it more difficult for citizens to see exactly how tax dollars are being allocated.  Bloomfield Hills Schools is slated to lose more than $1.6 million, according to estimates from the House Fiscal Agency. State Rep. Ellen Cogen …
