Winter Storm Could Dump Four or More Inches on Bloomfield

The National Weather Service issued a winter advisory through midnight Sunday.

That dusting of snow that came with the frigid temperatures earlier this week was just the precursor to the first major snowfall of the season this weekend.

Beginning today, four or more inches of snow could blanket the Metro Detroit area as a major storm system moves through the Midwest, according to the National Weather Service. The storm prompted a hazardous weather outlook alert and a winter weather advisory that began at midnight Saturday, and won't end until midnight Sunday. High temperatures will stay near 24 degrees during the day and dip to about 18 overnight.

The forecast was enough to cause the cancellation of tonight's Kids' Night Out at the Bowers School Farm. Bloomfield Hills Schools officials indicated that Feb. 8 is a tentative make-up date.

If you're travelling, heavy snowfall is expected across parts of the Ohio Valley and into the Northeast through Sunday. Freezing rain is also possible on Saturday from the central Appalachians into southern New England.

There's a 30 percent chance the snow could stay on Sunday with temperatures again expected in the low to mid-20s during the day, according to the forecast.
