Avondale School District’s Avondale Academy to Host Open House on Aug. 15 and Aug. 19 for the 2013-2014 School Year

School of choice offers traditional and non-traditional alternative education options for high school students through age 19 seeking to earn a diploma 

Auburn Hills, MI ---August 7, 2013---- Avondale School District, an achievement-oriented learning community focused on student leadership and success in academics, the arts and athletics, announces an open house will be held for the District’s alternative high school, the Avondale Academy, on Thursday, August 15 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Monday, Aug. 19 from 8 a.m. to noon. The open houses are geared to students entering high school in September and those currently attending charter schools. 

The Avondale Academy is a school of choice that offers both traditional and non-traditional educational opportunities to students entering high school and through age 19. At the Avondale Academy, students are able to attend day school in a typical high school class setting from 7:15 a.m. – 2:15 p.m. or virtual school approved by the State of Michigan. In the virtual school, students are assigned classes through the Education 20/20 program with the assistance of a mentor teacher. 

The educational opportunities offered through the Avondale Academy provide students numerous benefits at no cost, including small class sizes, a safe and friendly learning environment, multiple learning options, credit recovery, an Avondale School District diploma, individualized instruction accredited by the State of Michigan and transportation from some out of district locations. In June 2013,  32 students graduated from the Avondale Academy, including 13 who obtained their degrees through the Avondale Academy virtual school program.  

In addition to traditional aged high school students, students who did not receive a diploma with their graduating class and have not turned 20 prior to the first day of school can also attend the Avondale Academy or participate in virtual high school. Avondale Superintendent George Heitsch, Ed.D., notes that the extended age rule gives 18- and 19 year-olds new hope for receiving a diploma. 

“Many 18- and 19-year-olds who regret not obtaining their diplomas are within 6 credits of graduation,” confirms Heitsch. “The Avondale Academy works with these young adults to help them realize a diploma is within their reach.” 

Official registration for the 2013-2014 school year begins Aug. 19. Prospective students will need to provide their birth certificate, current transcript and up-to-date immunization records to be considered for enrollment.
