Weekend Events In and Around Bloomfield

From music, to film and benefits for local youth, there's quite a bit going on this weekend around town.

 

It’s Thursday, and if you’re looking for events around town you're in luck. The Bloomfield-Bloomfield Hills Patch Events Calendar is full of things to do. Take a look at the best bets we found for the upcoming weekend:

Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition's Battle of the Bands

  • When: 7-10:30 p.m. Friday
  • Where: Village Players
  • Cost: $2 (which includes one vote)
  • Why Go: Rock out the start of 2013 at the Youth Action Board's Winter Battle of the Bands at the Village Players Theater in Birmingham. Hear some of the best local talent, then vote for your favorite for just $1 each to cap off the substance-free celebration. All proceeds support Youth Action Board programs, a sponsored group of the Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition.

Film: Roeper School’s Diversity Film Series

  • When: 7:30-10 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: Roeper Upper School
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Stop by the Roeper School for a free screening of Sing Your Song, a documentary about the singer and actor, Harry Belafonte, and his struggle with the civil rights movement in Hollywood. The film is part of the Roeper Diversity Film Series.

Hillside Furniture's Third Annual Home Entertainment Expo

  • When: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Saturday; and noon - 6 p.m. Sunday 
  • Where: Hillside Furniture
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: See and learn about what this Bloomfield Township superstore and Bloomfield-Bloomfield Hills Patch Reader's Choice Winner has to offer in home furnishings. A portion of the proceeds will go towards Kids Kicking Cancer, a nonprofit organization that helps children with cancer manage the stress and pain of their disease and treatments through personalized coaching in martial arts. The event will feature raffles for prizes including a MacBook Pro; industry experts from furniture and electronics, and cupcakes from Just Baked, with a portion of the events proceeds going to Kids Kicking Cancer.

Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy at the JCC

  • When: 12 p.m. Sunday
  • Where: West Bloomfield Jewish Community Center
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Lenny Krayzelburg, a four-time gold medalist who swam in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, will be at the JCC in West Bloomfield from noon-2 p.m. The event kicks off a week of free swim evaluations at the center.

Chamber Concert at Manresa

  • When: 3 p.m. Sunday
  • Where: Manresa Jesuit Retreat House
  • Cost: $25
  • Why Go: The Fleur de Lys Chamber Ensemble will play in the Wernert Lounge, and an afterglow follows.
