Get Out: Local Bands Compete, Discover Treasures at Bowers Farm, and Experience the Beauty of Cranbrook

Go antiquing, catch a variety of music ranging from local garage bands to the symphony, and see how water influences and brings beauty to Cranbrook's landscape.

The weekend is here and Patch has provided some highlights of events you won't want to miss.

1.

Where: in Birmingham
When: 7-10:30 p.m. Friday
Why: Check out the hottest high school bands as they battle for the top prize: a professionally produced recording session furnished by The Academy of Music Performance and noted Birmingham musician and producer, Michael King. Organized by the Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition.

Where:
When: 7:30-9:30 p.m. Friday
Why: The will present a tribute performance in honor of dearly departed friend and member, Julia Kurtyka. The BBSO will perform Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor with the Oakland Choral Society and conductor Fredric DeHaven.

3. "Treasure" sale at the Bowers Farm

Where: Bowers School Farm (1219 Square Lake Rd.)
When:
8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday
Why go:
The Friends of Bowers Farm and the Friends of Preservation Bloomfield are joining together for a barn/gazebo sale for the second straight year. Proceeds will benefit the Bowers School Farm and Barton Farmhouse restoration project. Antiques, furniture, ceramics and other collectibles are just some of the 'treasures' participants will get to choose from, rain or shine.

4. Bowers 4H Fun Show

Where:  Bowers School Farm (1219 Square Lake Rd.)
When:
9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday
Why Go:
Considered a dress rehearsal for the July Oakland County Fair, participants can compete for prizes. The event coincides with the barn and gazebo sale to benefit the Friends of Bowers Farm and the Friends of Preservation Bloomfield.

5. The Waters of Cranbrook

Where: Cranbrook Institute of Science (39221 Woodward Ave.)
When:
1-2:30 p.m. Saturday
Why Go:
From the flowing waters of the Rouge River to reflecting pools and fountains, water is an integral part of Cranbrook’s heritage and landscape. This  strolling tour and presentation by Interim Head of Archives Leslie Edwards, Cranbrook Academy of Art Director Reed Kroloff and Institute of Science Watershed Education Coordinator Lisa Appel will illustrate how water has influenced Cranbrook in terms of history, landscape architecture, design and  science.
