Weekend Planner: Film Fest, Final Showing of 'She Loves Me,' and The DSO Neighborhood Concert

The Super Bowl may be the 'biggest' event this weekend, but there's still plenty more to do around Bloomfield and Bloomfield Hills.

  • When: 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Friday; with additional screening at 7:30 p.m.

  • Why Go: About 30 films by high school students that are aspiring directors, producers and actors are entered in the festival, which seeks to encourage and promote the creativity of some of Southeast Michigan's most promising young film artists. Entries this year include students from entries this time are from high schools in Birmingham (Groves), Royal Oak, Walled Lake (Western), Lake Orion, Warren (Fitzgerald), Romeo and elsewhere. Public screening of all films is $5.

  • When: Friday or Saturday at 8 p.m.
  • Why Go: This is the final weekend to catch the St. Dunstan Theatre Guild of Cranbrook's presentation of the charming romantic musical comedy She Loves Me. The family-friendly story is based on a film called Shop Around The Corner which also inspired the hit movie You’ve Got Mail. Jeff Davison of Bingham Farms is the show's director who said, “It’s a simple love story about two people that fall in love and can’t stand each other.”

  • Where:
  • Why Go: Cho-Liang Lin leads the DSO in performing Mozart’s 29th Symphony, which has been described as unique its combination of an intimate, chamber music style with a still fiery impulsive manner.   • Where:
  • Why Go: Are you thinking of sending your child to the Roeper School? The Upper School campus in Birmingham — where Roeper's middle school and high school-aged students attend — will be holding an open house Sunday. Both parents and students are encouraged to attend. A presentation, question-and-answer period, tour and sample class will be offered.

  • Why go: The exhibit explores the vast diversity and mysterious beauty of life forms on Earth, their importance to humanity, and how mass extinctions and evolution have shaped the world's history.
