Get Educated on Education Reform

The Avondale School District announces it will host Get Educated on Education Reform on Monday, November 14 from 7:30pm to 9:00pm at Avondale Middle School, 1445 W. Auburn Road in Rochester Hills.

The event is part of an initiative founded in West Michigan by the Michigan Communities for Local Control and is coordinated locally by the Tri-County Alliance for Public Education, a consortium of school superintendents from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties.  Dr. George Heitsch, Superintendent of the Avondale District and a member of the Tri-County Alliance, describes the forum as an opportunity for Southeast Michigan parents and friends of public schools to ask questions and gain understanding about the multiple education reforms currently being discussed in Lansing.

Dr. Heitsch says the non-partisan forum is parent and community focused and will not include presentations from local or state politicians.

Topics for discussion include:

  • Schools of Choice Mandate - Senate Bill 624: a state-wide mandate that would eliminate the ability for local school boards to determine school of choice decisions for their districts.
  • The School Aid Fund: The impact on the $470 per pupil cut in funding for public schools and efforts that can be undertaken to keep the School Aid Fund dedicated to K-12 students.
  • Charter Schools: An in-depth look at how Charters function and their place in Michigan communities.
  • Cyber-schools:  A look at how Cyber-schools would function in Michigan.
  • Conversion Schools: What are they and what impact might Conversion Schools have on local school districts?

In addition to Southeast Michigan-based educators and administrators, professors from Michigan State University and Western Michigan University will participate, and representatives from Grand Rapids will share their experience with grass roots efforts on education reform to date.
