Five Things You Should Know About This Week

Government and school board meetings, college recruiters and music history are all in the mix this week in Bloomfield.

1. Bloomfield Township Planning Commission Meeting Cancelled

Tonight's regularly scheduled meeting of the Bloomfield Township Planning Commission has been cancelled, according to a notice posted on the township's website last Thursday. No reason was given for the cancellation. 

2. College Night at the Bloomfield Hills Schools

Students in the Bloomfield Hills Schools and their parents are invited to meet with representatives from more than 100 colleges and universities at College Night, from 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. tonight at Lahser High School. Students are encouraged by the district to come with questions and learn about at least two colleges that are new to them. They are also encouraged to bring printed address labels to help complete information cards quickly.

3. Special Meeting on Unified High School Design

The Bloomfield Hills School District Board of Education invite the community for a special meeting on the proposed plans for a consolidated Bloomfield Hills High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the Doyle Center for Professional Development, 7273 Wing Lake Rd.

Consultants Fielding Nair International will present the 85 percent schematic for the plan that will merge Andover and Lahser high schools in 2013. The public will have an opportunity to review and comment on the plan. More information is available on the district's website.

4. The Origins of Motown

If high school consolidation isn't top of mind, and you appreciate the sweet sounds of Motown, don't miss a special presentation by Detroit Historical Society lecturer Joel Stone Tuesday at 7p.m. at the Bloomfield Township Public Library. Stone, curator with the historical society, will explore the origins of the distinct local sound that revolutionized the music industry.

5. Bloomfield Hills School Board

The Bloomfield Hills School District Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Doyle Center for Professional Development at 7273 Wing Lake Rd. That meeting will be followed by a regular board meeting at 7 p.m.

During their study session the board will discuss the consolidation of central administrative offices and have a closed session to discuss legal matters.

Later that evening, the board will receive reports on each of the community partnership committees; a summary of pending state legislation; and will recap Tuesday's presentation on the high-school consolidation plan.
