Five Things You Should Know About This Week

Get a look at the public meetings and other community events you might not want to miss in the Bloomfield area this week.

1. Bloomfield Township Planning Commission

The regularly scheduled Bloomfield Township Planning Commission meeting for Monday night has been cancelled. The board is still short a member that will  be appointed from a number of applicants to submit paperwork with Township Supervisor Leo Savoie by last Wednesday's deadline. The board has until Oct. 8 to make an appointment.

2. Popcorn Poppin’ at the Library

Families and residents of all ages are invited to celebrate National Popcorn Poppin’ Month with a drop-in program at the Bloomfield Township Public Library from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. All free activities take place in the Youth Story Room, and no registration is required.

3. Chamber After Hours Mixer 

The Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce hosts an after hours events for current and prospective members at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the . Appetizers are included and a cash bar will be available. The cost is $10 for members, and $20 for non-members that register in advance.

4. Bloomfield Hills School Board

The Bloomfield Hills School District Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 at the Doyle Center for Professional Development at 7273 Wing Lake Rd. That meeting will be followed by a regular meeting at 7 p.m.

During their study session, The board will receive a report on the Visible Thinking initiative by Way Elementary School Principal Adam Scher.

Later that evening, the board will consider appointment of the associate principal at Andover High School; a comprehensive annual financial report for the  2010-11 school year; and a resolution opposing mandatory schools of choice.

5. Cranbrook Lecture Series

Author Hampton Sides will deliver the Sirchio Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Kingswood Auditorium at Cranbrook.

Sides is editor-in-large for Outside magazine and is author of the award-winning Ghost Soldiers, and other works such as Hellhound on His Trail, and Americana. A Memphis, Tenn. native and graduate of Yale University with a B.A. in history, Sides will speak about his experience writing narrative history. He will take questions from the audience following the lecture, which is free and open to the public.
