See the local events, people and places that were newsmakers throughout the week in the Bloomfield area.

Couldn’t catch up to everything that happened in Bloomfield and Bloomfield Hills last week? No worries, Patch has some of the highlights:

Local Fourth of July Fireworks

The annual Birmingham Fireworks Show attracted a large, enthusiastic crowd from Birmingham and other Metro Detroit communities. It was a pleasant, somewhat overcast night with a cool breeze. As the sun set, the crowd was treated to subtle changes in the color of the sky, followed by an explosion of color as the fireworks show kicked off at dusk.

Library Board Applications

Officials with the Bloomfield Township Public Library confirmed that eight applications for the vacant Board of Trustees seat were received by the June 30 deadline. Library Director Karen Kotulis-Carter said she believed interviews will take place in the next two weeks and that the new board could swear in its newest member as early as the Aug. 16 meeting.

Casey Anthony Verdict

Though it happened in Orlando, FL, the acquittal of Casey Anthony in her toddler's death sparked reaction nationwide — and some high praise from local fellow defense attorneys who watched the trial unfold. The case was also the topic of our weekly Moms Talk, as we asked local parents and caregivers how they can explain the complexities of the case and verdict to children and teens.

Whiz Kid

We introduced you to Michael Deneroff, a Roeper student who won first place at the Science and Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit with a project combining sports and physics. The young researcher from Bloomfield Hills examined how baseballs curve differently if pitchers have something on their hands, such as saliva, pine tar or Vaseline.

Township Approves Process to Appoint Supervisor

The person appointed to replace retiring Bloomfield Township Supervisor Dave Payne will have a familiar face, but which member of the current board it will be has not been determined. Or, has it? Treasurer Dan Devine said he wasn't so sure after the board voted Thursday to keep the appointment applicants amongst themselves and not the general public.

Police Beat

We rounded out the week with crime blotters from the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety and the Bloomfield Township Police Department. Among the highlights were police use of a Taser to subdue an uruly motorist and shoplifters who now face felony charges after a pedestrian was injured as they tried to flee from a local store.
