Week in Review: Savoie selected, Jalen Rose Jailed and Residents Lose Power

Did you also miss our Whiz Kid of the week or the first week of our summer photo contest?

Couldn’t catch up to everything that happened in Bloomfield and Bloomfield Hills last week? No worries, Patch has some of the highlights:

Savoie Selected As Next Bloomfield Township Supervisor

In just a matter of minutes Monday, Leo Savoie tendered his resignation as a trustee for Bloomfield Township so that he could then be appointed supervisor by his colleague's.

Savoie, a long-time township resident, was seleted by a 4-2 vote that followed a contentious meeting that was televised for the first time in township history. Savoie was sworn in Thursday during a brief ceremony at Township Hall.

Rose's Rough Day

Not the best of days for former NBA and Fab Five star Jalen Rose, who was ordered Wednesday by 48th District Court Judge Kimberly Small to serve 20 days in jail for drunken driving in March in West Bloomfield.

Later that night, Clawson police ticketed the Detroit native for driving 46 mph in a posted 25 mph. He cooperated and faces a $125 fine on that offense.

Rose is scheduled to report to the Oakland County Jail for his drunken driving sentence on Tuesday.

Whiz Kid Forges Career Path in Volunteerism

Also Wednesday, we introduced you to Armani Hawes, a recent Lahser High School graduate who earned a paid internship with Focus:HOPE this summer and is among 230 students nationwide to participate in Bank of America’s Student Leaders Program.

The University of Michigan-bound Hawes was chosen for repeatedly demonstrating leadership in volunteerism. Since her freshman year, she has raised more than $11,000 for the Royal Oak-based Judson Center, which offers family counseling, foster care, autism awareness and other services to unprivileged families.

Patch of Michigan Photo Contest

Bloomfield Patch has joined with other Patch sites around the state and asked you to share your visions of Michigan in pictures this summer as part of our first Your Patch of Michigan photo contest. And you responded in droves. The count is at more than 550 entries and climbing. Week two gets underway today.

A panel of Michigan Patch editors will pick a winner every week for the next eight weeks, and each weekly winner will get a prize. This week it was a $30 gift card to Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurant in Clawson. A grand prize winner will be selected from the group of weekly award winners after Sept. 17.

Power Outtage

Roughly 700 Bloomfield Township residents lost power for several hours Thursday. The blackouts affected residents living in an area between Telegraph Road and Woodward Avenue and Lone Pine and Long Lake, DTE officials said.

The outage was caused by an automated detection device, which is designed to prevent greater outages from occurring once one starts in the electricity stream. Power was restored form most after 9 p.m.

Police Blotter

We ended the week reminding residents to take precautionary steps   that can help them avoid becoming a target for opportunistic property thieves. A second vehicle parked outside a Bloomfield Township fitness center was burglarized in broad daylight, Bloomfield Township police said. The vehicle was unlocked and a purse was taken.

Officers responded to the L.A. Fitness on July 22 after the vehicle’s owner returned to find her purse missing, reports said.
