If you won't listen to us, Mr. Moss & Mr. Pappageorge, listen to Mr. McLellan

Why won't local elected officials listen or explain to the voters what their "lame duck" votes mean?

Local State Representative Chuck Moss and State Senator John Pappageorge have heard a lot from local residents in the last several days about HB 6004.

Like BHSD and Birmingham school boards and superintendents, many residents are convinced this legislation is the first piece of Richard McLellan's efforts to destroy public education as we know it.

In response, Mr. Moss and Mr. Pappageorge have been responding that HB6004 won't effect their constituents -- so calm down.

I am writing here to urge Mr. Moss and Mr. Pappageorge to listen to their school boards and to their other constituents. AND I am inviting them to listen to Mr. McLellan.

Here is the text from today's Reuters story by Stephanie Simon, "Classes a La Carte: States Test a New School Model," quoting Mr. McLellan.

"Critics often say "the governor is trying to destroy public education as we know it," McLellan said. "That's accurate."

A spokesman for Governor Rick Snyder said he aims to enhance, not destroy, public education, by allowing state funding to flow to any number of quality educators instead of sending the bulk of it to traditional schools. Snyder has not said whether he supports the McLellan plan but has repeatedly called for reinventing the school so students can learn "any time, any place, any way, at any pace."

If Mr. Moss and Mr. Pappageorge won't listen to constituents, perhaps they will listen to the Governor's man.

At minimum they are obligated to tell residents and voters that they are in fact voting to "destroy public education as we know it."
