Hit & Run Editorial

On July 4, my parked car was hit by a neighbor's guest.  Upon seeing the damage she had done to my car, the driver took off.  There were witnesses but nobody got the license plate of the other vehicle.  To add insult to injury, the neighbor then lied to me and to the police about knowing the driver.  They pretended not to speak English.

I am a disabled person on a fixed income.  My car sustained $1,000 worth of damage.  Somehow, I have to come up with the money to pay my deductible so my car can get fixed.

This is not a plea for money or information.  I just need to vent to my neighbors.

I am so frustrated by this experience.  It may not seem like a big thing, and really, in the big picture that is life, it's not a huge deal.  But for me, right here and right now, it is everything.

The worst part of this whole experience has been losing my faith in people.  I am hurt by the fact that someone could so seemingly easily lie to the police and not take responsibility for their own actions.  We all make mistakes.  A real adult stands up and apologizes.

Right?

The driver in question is from another country and may not be aware of the "rules".  Maybe they don't have insurance.  I don't know.  They complain that people judge them on the color of their skin.  I have always tried not to do that, but now being treated the way I have been, I am struggling with  people of this nationality.

And that makes me even more resentful.

Damage to property can be fixed so easily.  Throw a few dollars at a body shop and you're done.  How does your faith in humanity get restored?
