Arrests Made in Bloomfield Township Carjacking

Four men from out-of-state in the area selling magazines are tied to multiple violent crimes in Bloomfield and Detroit, police said.

Four men that sold magazines door-to-door in Bloomfield Hills are suspected in a violent carjacking outside a Bloomfield Township Kroger and a stabbing in Detroit this week, police said.

The men are in custody and awaiting charges in both Oakland and Wayne counties for the alleged crimes that started Sunday night. Officers with the Bloomfield Township Police Department responded to the Kroger parking lot at 4099 Telegraph Rd. at about 11 p.m. for a report of a carjacking, and encountered the victim who was injured, reports said.

The man told police he was in his parked vehicle when four men approached him and asked for a ride. The man refused, and said he was assaulted and pulled from the vehicle by all four men. They then got into the vehicle and fled, reports said.

The man initially refused medical treatment at the scene from firefighters but later went to a hospital for his unspecified injuries, according to reports. His condition was not available Thursday.

Officers with the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety responded to radio traffic about the incident and told investigators that they released four men with similar physical descriptions from the department at about 10:30 p.m. after they were detained for soliciting in the city without a license.

Investigators used that information to identify two of the suspects, and arrested them the next day at a home on Lafayette Street in Detroit, reports said. Detectives then learned the identities of the other two suspects, and arrested them in a motel located off of Jefferson Avenue in Detroit.

Police said the two men were in the process of fleeing to Kansas City, Mo. at the time of the arrest.

Detroit Police officers located the victim's vehicle that same day on the city's west side. Bloomfield Township detectives searched it and found evidence that helped them determine that the suspects used the vehicle to commit an armed robbery in Detroit where a victim was stabbed following the local carjacking, reports said.

The suspects, a 26-year-old man from Shreveport, La.; a 24-year-old man from Memphis, TN; a 23-year-old man from Chicago; and a 23-year-old man from Birmingham, AL, were turned over to the Detroit Police Department for further investigation of the armed robbery and remain in custody. Their identities were not released pending charges.

Detectives said the men were in the Detroit area selling magazine subscriptions for the last couple of months.
