UPDATED: Ben Wallace Pleads Guilty in Drunken Driving, Weapons Cases

In court Tuesday, Detroit Pistons center pleads gun charge down to misdemeanor and admits having a blood-alcohol level of 0.14.

Veteran Detroit Piston Ben Wallace pleaded guilty this morning to misdemeanor drunken driving and weapons offenses in Oakland County Circuit Court, officials said.

The 37-year-old Bloomfield Hills resident told Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Shalina Kumar that he blew a .14 blood alcohol level upon his arrest in Bloomfield Township in September during the brief court appearance, the Detroit Free Press reported.

He faces fines, community service and up to 93 days in jail at sentencing Dec. 13. Any sentencing recommendation from prosecutors will be subject to a pre-sentence report compiled by county probation officials over the next few weeks.

Wallace's attorney, Steve Fishman, commended the prosecutor's office and Kumar for treating his client just as any other resident.

"I think the prosecutor's office and the court treated him very fairly and was happy to see he was treated the same as any other citizen with a perfect record," he said.

Wallace was initially charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. However, prosecutors reduced the weapons offense to a misdemeanor charge of being drunk with the gun, court officials said.

Bloomfield Township police officers arrested Wallace at about 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 24 after witnessing his Cadillac driving erratically in the area of Telegraph and Long Lake roads, police reports said.

He failed multiple sobriety tests at the scene and initial Breathalyzer tests showed a blood-alcohol content of more than the state legal limit of .08. He later told officers that the gun they found in a backpack in the vehicle belonged to his wife, and that he had it for protection while driving from Virginia to Michigan the previous day.

Despite the ongoing NBA lockout, Fishman said Wallace has expressed no interest in playing abroad this season, which could require special permission from the court.

"Ben Wallace has had a long and distinguished career in the NBA and I'd be shocked and amazed if he chose to go play anywhere else," he said.
