Catalytic Converter Thieves Strike Bloomfield Township Car Dealerships

Bloomfield Township police said thieves targeted Honda Bloomfield and Dick Scott dealerships last week.

Employees at Honda Bloomfield reported the catalytic converters of two vehicles were cut off and stolen overnight last week, according to Bloomfield Township Police Department reports.

Officers responded to the dealership on the township's north side on Sept. 25 and determined the thief or thieves cut a fence to get access to the vehicles. The theft occurred sometime between 5 p.m. Sept. 24 and 10 a.m. Sept. 25, reports said. Detectives did not provide any suspect information but continue to investigate.

Officers responded to the Dick Scott Auto Dealership on Sept. 27 after an employee discovered a catalytic converter missing from a vehicle parked in the lot. The theft reportedly occurred sometime between Sept. 25 and Sept. 27.

The converters, which are used to filter engine emissions, are commonly targeted by thieves because of the valuable metal components inside, such as platinum or palladium, authorities said.

Thieves also struck Bloomfield Honda in January, and detectives are currently investigating nearly a dozen similar thefts reported since the spring. No suspect information was available.
