Chief Rick Matott Resigns from Bloomfield Hills

The Bloomfield Hills City Commission is expected to discuss the process to replace the long-time officer and chief tonight.

Chief Rick Matott of the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety will step down effective May 31, ending a 33-year career with the city.

In a letter submitted to City Manager Jay Cravens on Friday, Matott indicated the announcement met his obligation to provide the city 30-days notice, and noted that it gives city officials ample time to help with the search and training of his successor. Matott declined comment Tuesday.

Though it is not on the approved agenda, the City Commission is expected to review and discuss his letter of resignation and end date at their regularly scheduled meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.

"We would like to thank Chief Matott for his service to this community," Mayor Sarah McClure told Downtown Publications. "The city will be conducting a search for a new chief. We'll start a discussion on how that will proceed on Tuesday evening."

Matott, 59, became chief in 2005. He joined the department as a dispatcher in 1980 following his discharge from the U.S. Air Force. He became a sworn officer upon earning a degree in law enforcement and graduating from the police academy at Oakland Community College in 1983. He was named one of OCC's Outstanding Alumni in 2012.
