Cranbrook Issues Statement Over Student's Death

Family of 15-year-old sophomore requests privacy following last week's death, which remains under investigation.

Cranbrook school officials issued a brief statement Friday morning following the death of a student in a residential dormitory on campus last week.

The 15-year-old boy was found unresponsive in a hallway when officers with the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety responded to the campus at about 5 a.m., Oct. 5, police reports said. Despite efforts to revive him, the student died of causes that are yet to be determined. A preliminary autopsy revealed no signs of foul play; the incident remains under investigation the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety and the Oakland County Medical Examiner's office.

The student's name was not released by authorities.

In today's statement, school officials said they would not confirm information regarding the student's identification in accordance with the family’s request for privacy.

Officials also reiterated that the while the cause of death remains undetermined, officers and detectives on scene did not suspect any suspicious activity or substances that may have led to the tragedy.

"This is a deeply painful time for the school community and, obviously, for the family. Cranbrook’s thoughts are with the family, faculty, students, and friends at this time of great loss," the statement read.

Chief Rick Matott of the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety said the final determination of a cause of death could take a few weeks.
