UPDATED:Former Athletic Trainer Charged With Smoking Pot at Bloomfield Hills High School

The charges resulted from an incident at the school on Oct. 18.

A long-time athletic trainer in the Bloomfield Hills Schools faces drug charges after she allegedly smoked marijuana while on duty at Bloomfield Hills High School.

Shira Schiff, 55, faces single counts of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia stemming from an incident at the new Bloomfield Hills High School on Oct. 18. She was arraigned at 48th District Court Friday, posted a $500 bond and is expected to appear for a preliminary hearing next week, records show.

Schiff, of Huntington Woods, was barred from the building by district officials after the incident, and a police report indicates she has since resigned from the district. Schiff worked with athletic trainer John Ciecko at the consolidated high school this year after several years as head trainer at Andover High School.

District spokeswoman Shira Good confirmed that Schiff resigned and is no longer with the district. Official action by the Bloomfield Hills Schools Board of Education to formally accept the resignation could happen at the next meeting on Dec. 5.

A police report released Monday states that the school's liaison officer with the Bloomfield Township Police Department responded to the school on Oct. 18 after another teacher suspected smelling marijuana as he entered the training room with a student that bumped her head, reports said.

Schiff reportedly admitted to having marijuana when questioned by Principal Charlie Hollerith in his office and turned the drugs over to authorities. The investigation revealed she used the drugs on school property, reports said. Lab tests confirmed the substance was marijuana before the Bloomfield Township attorney — who acts as a prosecutor in misdemeanor cases — filed charges.
