ACLU Plans Lawsuit to Force Michigan to Recognize 300 Same-Sex Marriages
Details of the lawsuit will be announced at a Monday afternoon news conference.
The American Civil Liberties Union plans to file a lawsuit to require Michigan to recognize the marriages of couples who wed during the brief period that same-sex marriage was legal in the state.
U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman ruled March 21 that Michigan’s voter-backed ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. Gov. Rick Snyder said the marriages of about 300 couples who married are legal, but the state won’t recognize them because the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has issued a stay on Friedman’s ruling pending an appeal.
The ACLU said it will share details of its planned lawsuit at a news conference in Detroit Monday afternoon, the Detroit Free Press reports.
