Mitt Romney's Cranbrook Antics Take Center Stage Again in Presidential Campaign

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee apologizes for some 'dumb things' while growing up in Bloomfield Hills.

Some of those antics are again at the center of the presidential campaign today as the Washington Post published a story in which former classmates describe first-hand an incident when Romney forced down a fellow student and cut his hair. The story, which ran the day after President Barack Obama stated he supports gay marriage in a nationally televised interview, indicates the student was perpetually teased for being a non-conformer and presumed homosexual.

Romney, a graduate of the Cranbrook Class of 1965, apologized today, telling Fox News' Brian Kilmeade that "Back in high school, I did some dumb things, and if anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize for that.”

“It happened very quickly, and to this day it troubles me,” Romney classmate Thomas Buford told the Post. The school’s former wrestling champion said he joined Romney in restraining the student and later apologized. “What a senseless, stupid, idiotic thing to do.”

Buford was a volunteer with Obama's campaign in 2008, the Post reported.

Yet Romney didn't necessarily disagree with his former schoolmate.

“I participated in a lot of hijinks and pranks during high school, and some might have gone too far, and for that I apologize,” the former Massachusetts governor told Kilmeade.
