Poll Suggests Support for Gay Marriage in Michigan May Be Waning

Support for same-sex marriage may be waning in Michigan, a new poll suggests.

The poll, conducted exclusively for the Detroit Free Press and WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) by EPIC-MRA of Lansing, showed that 47 percent of likely voters would support same-sex marriage if an election were held today and 46 percent would oppose it. Seven percent declined were either undecided or refused to disclose how they’d vote.

However, Bernie Porn, president of the polling group, said the results may be a one-time fluke. A year ago, the same poll suggested that 51 percent of Michiganders supported same-sex marriage and 41 percent opposed it.

Porn said it’s too early to tell if the mood of likely voters has changed, or if the findings are the result of intense media attention given the issue after a federal judge struck down Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage and the state’s subsequent appeal.
