Approximately 300 people gathered at on Sunday for the unveiling of the Michigan World War II Legacy Memorial. The memorial is designed to be a place where future generations can learn about the more than 600,000 Michigan residents who served in the armed services in World War II.
State Sen. John Pappageorge, R-Troy, Royal Oak Mayor Jim Ellison, Rep. Jim Townsend and were among the speakers at the event attended by members of Michigan’s veterans organizations, school groups, friends and family.
“The city of Royal Oak is so proud to be selected as the location of the World War II Legacy Memorial,” Mayor Jim Ellison said.
Royal Oak’s proximity to Detroit and major freeways and its many events, including the Woodward Dream Cruise, would give the memorial exposure to the masses, the mayor said.
“We do not take our responsibility lightly,” Ellison said. “It is with great humility and a lot of pride that we as Royal Oakers accept the stewardship of this memorial.”
