It's mid-February, and while it may not seem like the ideal time for a day off or a long weekend, Monday is indeed a national holiday.
President's Day, established in 1885 to honor our first President, George Washington, is now expanded to include all others to occupy the Oval Office. However, how the holiday is honored and celebrated is not universal.
All Bloomfield Township offices, for example, will remain open Monday, while all city offices in Bloomfield Hills will be closed in observance of the holiday. Most banks in the area are also closed for service, and, as usual, all state and federal offices will be closed on Monday, including the U.S. Post Office on South Boulevard.
The Baldwin Public Library will be open for regular hours. However, the Bloomfield Township Public Library will be closed as a furlough day for staff. The library will reopen at regular hours on Tuesday.
Students at the The Roeper School start their mid-Winter Break Monday, and Cranbrook students are off Monday in observance of the holiday. Students in the Bloomfield Hills Schools won't start their mid-winter break until Friday.
Also open Monday:
- Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center
- The Community House
- Cranbrook Institute of Science
