5 Things Going On in the BHS This Week

Playoff basketball, MME testing and a much-needed blood drives are among the events during this busy week in the Bloomfield Hills Schools.

Monday March 4

Varsity Basketball District Playoffs at Andover

Playoff fever will be in the air at the Andover High School gym this week as six local teams vie for the MHSAA District 27 Title. The Lahser High School Knights will start the action with a 5 p.m. tip-off against West Bloomfield. The 14-6 Knights, co-champs of the OAA Blue during the regular season, look to repeat as district champs in what will be the school's final season. West Bloomfield is 8-12 on the season.

Andover, coming off a thrilling 62-60 overtime win against Oxford, will take on Birmingham Seaholm (15-5) in front of the home crowd for perhaps the final time in school history at 7 p.m. The Barons are 11-9 and will merge with Lahser to become the new Bloomfield Hills High School next fall.

Brother Rice and Orchard Lake St. Mary's await the winners of both contests on Wednesday.

Tuesday, March 5

Michigan Merit Exams

Testing for the Michigan Merit Exam (MME), which asses students on Michigan high school standards, will commence for 11th graders in the district. As a result, there is no school for studetns in grades K-10 and 12.

Last year — the first in which the state implemented new cut scores — proficiency scores for students in BHS schools dropped, but still remained well above state averages.

Wednesday, March 6

Blood Drive at West Hills

Donate blood and potentially help save a life during the annual Lone Pine/West Hills blood drive from 2-8 p.m. at the West Hills Middle School cafeteria. Contact Beth Sinclair at tbsinclair21@gmail.com to set an appointment.

Thursday, March 7

Board of Education Meetings

The Bloomfield Hills Schools Board of Education meets at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Doyle Center. The Meeting agendas were not posted on the district website or distributed to local media as of Sunday night.

Saturday, March 9

Third-Annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser

Bloomfield Youth Guidance, the local organization that provides scholarships and enrichment opportunities for BHS students, will offer a wide variety of wines and hors d’hoeuvres on 7 p.m. at the Detroit Skating Club during their annual fundraiser. Tickets are $50 and tax deductable.
