Bloomfield Black Hawks Football, A New Tradition

Black and yellow and blue and white mix to make purple at Bloomfield Hills High School's inaugural football game.

The result on the field may not have been ideal, but to say the first football game in Bloomfield Hills Black Hawk history was unsuccessful isn't completey accurate.

For the first time, Lahser Knights and Andover Barons of old joined Bloomfield Hills High School students of today and the future in a new tradition on Dauch Field.

"This is it!" said Kathy Wagerson to fellow parents while selling game programs outside the stadium Friday night. "We're finally here, to this point, and it's pretty cool."

The two-year transition for students — grades 10-12 on the main campus at the former Lahser High School, and freshman at 9th grade campus — begins Tuesday, but the blending of both former high schools has been well under way for months.

"This feels a little weird, but I'm definitely fired up about being her for the first game. Otherwise I wouldn't be here so early," said Lauren Lacks, a member of the first BHHS graduating class and a proud Lahser Knight until last June. She and a few friends arrived about an hour before kickoff to soak in the new field and new sights at Dauch Field.

Tough start

Unfortunately, Lacks and other fans had few positives to see in on the field. Birmingham Groves took the lead on the first play from scrimmage, and didn't stop scoring behind nearly 200 yards rushing by senior tailback Ross Williams in the first half. Ominous skies with flashes of lightning forced officials to postpone the second half until Saturday morning with the Black Hawks trailing 34-13.

“The big plays hurt us,” Head Coach Dan Loria told Miprepzone.com. “They’re a physical team that’s well-coached, and they took advantage of the big plays."

First-half highlights for the Black Hawks included a 20-yard scoring pass from quarterback Spencer McCourt to Xzavier Reynolds with just 10 seconds remaining in the second quarter. McCourt also scored a touchdown in the second half, but the Black Hawks couldn't rally and lost 47-19.

The Black Hawks play at Oxford on Sept. 6 in the OAA White league opener.
