UPDATED: Cranbrook Nabs Second Straight State Title in Swimming

The defending champs dominate with strong performances from several members of the 2011 squad.

The Cranbrook-Kingswood girls varsity swim team powered its way to a second consecutive state title over the weekend at Eastern Michigan University behind strong performances from veterans of the 2011 campaign.

The Aardvarks (Lady Cranes) cruised to victory in Division 3 with a total of 361 points, exactly 150 points better than runner-up Bloomfield Hills Lahser High School. Hamilton finished third with 168.5 points, according to the MHSAA website.

Cranbrook graduated just a handful of swimmers that brought home the school's first Division 3 title a year ago. The returning members showed just how much that experience paid off.

Kylie Powrie, Alexa Resetar, Madeline Montgomery and Lara Kokubo sealed the state crown in record-breaking fashion by finishing first with a 3:33.63 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, according to mlive.com. That beat Marian's standing record by nearly two seconds.

"That was unexpected," first-year coach Chris Bagley told mlive.com. "I don't think they had a clue (they set the record). We really relied on those girls all year, and they really came through in a big way. I'm pretty sure it was the first time the four of those girls were all together on that relay. They really showed they deserved it."

Kokubo also won the individual state title in the 100-yeard freestyle (52.19), and she joined Montgomery, Juliet Wu, and Powrie to win the 200-yard freestyle over Holland Christian by two-tenths of a second (1:38.42), according to the MHSAA website.

This story was updated to reflect Madeline Montgomery was a member of the 400-m relay team, and that the girl's swimming team is commonly known as the Aardvarks.
