Registration for Birmingham Covington School Begins Monday

Spots at the heralded school in Bloomfield Township for the 2013-14 school year will be available, and depending on demand, a lottery is scheduled for Jan. 16.

If you have a child that wants to attend the Birmingham Covington School (BCS), they may soon get that chance in the next few weeks.

Registration begins Monday for the 2013-14 BCS lottery, with the Birmingham district scheduled to pick the new BCS students on Jan. 16. BCS, Birmingham's combined elementary and middle school, is designed for students in grades 3-8 that are looking for a rigorous approach to science, math and interdisciplinary learning.

As one of the highest-performing schools in the Birmingham Public School district, BCS was one of eight U.S. schools to be named a Microsoft Innovative School for 2012-13 and was recently recognized for innovation at an International Education Competition.

BCS also made the Michigan Department of Education's list of schools that are "Beating the Odds" in November 2011. Also in 2011, BCS was ranked among the top 1 percent of all Michigan schools in student performance.

Admission to BCS is determined by a lottery, and for the 2013-14 school year, that lottery is fast approaching. Tonight, BCS will hold an information session for parents in the BCS Media Center at 7 p.m., intended for those who weren't able to attend the BCS Open House in December.

Registration, meanwhile, will take place from Jan. 7-11 at Birmingham Public Schools' administration building at 550 W. Merrill St. Registration is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with hours extended to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

In the event that the number of registrations exceed the number of available spaces, a public lottery will then be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16 in the BCS Staff Development Room. Verified lottery results will be published by 4 p.m. the next day.

Meanwhile, the 2012-13 Wait List will expire at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25. That date is also the deadline for those students chosen in the lottery to enroll. Individual parent meetings for accepted students are scheduled to begin Jan. 28.
