Summer Reading for Bloomfield Hills High School Students

The English department at the new Bloomfield Hills High School recommends the following books before summer's end.

There are many reasons to be excited about the new Bloomfield Hills High School set to open next fall. But when all the hoopla over the merger of Andover and Lahser high schools subsides, the focus will return to the hard work needed to maintain the high academic standards students and faculty were accustomed to at the old buildings.

Members of the new merged school's English department want students to get started now. This week, the faculty and district released their summer reading list to ensure high school students are prepared for the fall. Here are five highlights:

AP Language

Students are encouraged to read Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell, and Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser.

AP Literature

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, and William Shakespeare's Hamlet

American Literature

Students are encouraged to read The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, and The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.

Creative Writing

Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Patillo Beals.

Modern Literature

Arc of Justice by Kevin Boyle.
