Whiz Kid Kristen Law Works to Inspire Young Scientists

The Andover High School junior is a robotics guru who at 17 enjoys teaching younger girls the fun of studying science.

Bloomfield-Bloomfield Hills Patch regularly features students doing amazing things. This week's Whiz Kid is an activist and science lover at heart who, despite her age, sees the importance of exposing more young girls to what science, technology, engineering and mathemics have to offer.

Achievement: Bloomfield Youth Guidance recently named Law among eight local students — and the only high school junior — as an Outstanding Youth Citizen.

Law has a love for science, and robotics in particular, that started even before she started working with the Andover Robotics Club — while just in 7th grade. Now a captain of the Barons team, she spent more than 250 hours of community service related to robotics and fostering a love for science in younger girls.

She is the founder and director of Destination STEM, a non-profit organization that develops and implements activities to promotes girls’ early engagement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Law also built and maintains a website for the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in Michigan, the organization that regulates robotics competitions across the state.

Earlier this year, the National Center for Women & Information Technology named her a National Award Winner for 2013, and cited her efforts to coordinate numerous all-girls summer camps that explore computer programming and website design.

"It feels great to be recognized," she said this week. "I hope I can be an inspiration to other kids."

What's Next?: Law said she plans to study engineering and computer science in college.
