Another Record-Setting Game for Lahser Lady Knights

The Lahser Lady Knights continued to rewrite the record books in the school's final season Thursday with another 'no-doubt' victory over Oak Park.

Lahser guard Katie Stewart resumed her sharp-shooting and drained a school-record 10 three-point shots to lead the team with 32 points, Varsity Head Coach Bob Brydges said. The previous school record was seven.

The shooting barrage followed Stewart's jaw-dropping performance Tuesday, when she scored 37 points in a 78-38 rout of Hazel Park . . . in three quarters. The point total surpassed the previous school record of 34, and she did it on 12 field goals (including four three pointers) with just one make at the free-throw line, Brydges said.

"I don't know what's in the water right now, but I told her to keep drinking it," Brydges said following the victory, which extended the team's winning streak to three and improved Lahser's overall record to 8-10.

A Special Backcourt

Brydges credited Stewart's desire and talent for her recent hot streak, but emphasized that the entire team's improved execution on offense is helping. The biggest reason for that, he added, has been the inspired play of point guard Suzanne Miller.

The pass-happy senior's eight assists Thursday gave her 135 for the season, the most in the history of either the boy's or girl's varsity programs at Lahser, Brydges said. Miller also broke the school record in single-game assists with 15 in a 66-23 win over Hazel Park last month.

"What can I say about Sue Miller," Brydges gushed after Miller's record-setting performance before an emotional crowd on Senior Night. "For her to sacrifice her own offense to do what's best for the team to be successful has been amazing. This is the best we've moved the ball around all year."

The Lady Knights also showed improvements on defense throughout the streak. Amid Stewart's offensive onslaught Tuesday, the junior racked up nine steals, Brydges said. On Thursday, Oak Park manged just six points in the first half.

"For us to especially come out and get after it defensively like that set the tone for the entire game," Brydges said. "That's how we'll have to play to make a run."

If Brydges' team is to make a run in the playoffs, Lahser will certainly be battle-tested. The Lady Knights play at league leaders Ferndale (Feb. 19) and Royal Oak (Feb. 21) before District Playoffs begin Feb. 25.
