Boys Lacrosse Finals

Brother Rice and Detroit Country Day

  • . The Warriors won the Division 1 championship easily with a 15-4 win at Seaholm High School.

Their defense didn’t allow a single goal in the first half, helping Brother Rice take a 10-0 lead into halftime. And it was over right there. The Warriors' pressure on defense and precision on offense was too much for a Forest Hills team making its first appearance in the state finals.
  • Detroit Country Day had a similar day in Division 2. in the late game at Seaholm.

The Yellowjackets won 11 straight games to end the season and give coach Bryon Collins a title in his first year as head coach.

Academy of the Sacred Heart (girls)

  • The Gazelles have nothing to hang their heads about. at Troy Athens Saturday. The teams were so evenly matched they almost needed a third overtime period to settle things.

  • Bloomfield Hills Andover competed as a team in the regional as well, finishing sixth. Brandon Steingold put up the best score for Andover with a 79.

  • Brother Rice lost to a familiar foe in the Division 1 regional finals on Saturday. Their Catholic League rival Detroit Catholic Central ended the warriors’ season with a 7-4 win. It was the fourth time this season Catholic Central beat the Warriors this season.

Things looked good for Brother Rice early in the game. The team scored twice in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. After Catholic Central answered in the second, Jimmy Pickens hit a home run to give his team the lead right back at 3-2.

But the Warriors pitching staff couldn’t hold it together. Catholic Central came right back and scored three runs in the third inning. They never regained the lead. Brother Rice did win its early game in the regional semifinals 4-2 over Canton to set up the all-Catholic League regional final.

Andover and Detroit Country Day

  • Both local teams in the Division 2 regionals ran into the juggernaut known as St. Clair. The Saints crushed both Andover and Country Day to advance to the quarterfinals for a second straight year.

Country Day lost 11-1 in the regional semifinals in six innings (mercy rule) and then Andover lost 11-3 in the finals. Neither team could keep St. Clair’s lineup off the bases. Andover allowed 13 hits and the Yellowjackets allowed nine. Cam Ciaciuch had four RBIS on the day and hit a home run in each game.

Softball Regionals

Country Day

  • The final score didn’t quite reflect how the Yellowjackets played in the Division 3 regional semifinals on Saturday. Armada beat Country Day 9-1 to advance, but the game was close until the final two innings. The game was tied 1-1 going into the fifth. Armada scored two runs and then shut the door on the Yellowjackets with five more in the sixth.

The late surge helped Armada's Erin Kownacki get the win for Canton. The pitcher only allowed two hits against Country Day and struck out nine. Armada ended up winning the regional with a 10-0 win over Notre Dame Prep.
