Highlight Reel: Lahser Football 3-0 For First Time Since 2005

The Knights impressive 20-0 win over Seaholm highlights exciting week of Bloomfield area sports action.

It was a wild week of football for the Bloomfield area teams. Lahser showed the Oakland Activities Blue division teams why it’s a contender and Andover fell just short again!

What a week for Bloomfield Hills football teams.

Seaholm vs. Lahser, two of the three undefeated teams in the Oakland Activities Association Blue division, was supposed to be the game of the week. But Andover and Avondale may have stole the show on Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets needed a last second 45-yard field goal from kicker Kyle Sroka to escape Baron Field with a 23-20 victory. It was already the second game determined by three points or less for Andvoer this season. The Barons didn’t have a single game decided by less than 17 points among their eight losses last season.

Avondale’s high-powered passing game was limited to less than 200 yards and was down 20-13 in the third quarter. Quarterback Mitch Robinson helped lead the comeback for the Yellow Jackets with a touchdown pass in the fourth.

It was a devastating loss for the Barons and their fans.

"Heartbreak: Avondale field goal from the 50-yd line with no time left on the clock, and it counts," Tweeted @keldade moments after time expried.

Lahser wasn’t feeling any heartbreak, but was dishing some out at Seaholm, spoiling the Maples home opener with a 20-0 shutout win on Friday.

The Knights defense limited the Maples to just 121 yards and also scored the first points of the game on a 65-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Running back Dajaun Burnley added two touchdowns for Lahser in the fourth quarter, and that was enough.

“We just didn’t make the plays when we needed to,” Seaholm Head Coach Jim Pobursky said. “They are 3-0 now, I think they are a pretty good team.”

Detroit Country Day won its first game of the season on Thursday 49-0 over Harper Woods. John Hill scored three touchdowns in the win for the Yellowjackets and had an interception.

After losing their first two games of the season, Country Day needed to get some momentum as it goes on the road for three straight games starting next week.

Brother Rice also won a blowout this week, 42-9 over Toledo St. Francis in Toledo. Devin Church ran for over 120 yards and scored a touchdown to help the Warriors improve to 3-0.

Marian beat Cranbrook Kingswood at the Stonycroft Hills Golf Club on Tuesday 194-184 in battle of two of the top golf programs in Oakland County.

Mustangs Senior Ellen Manson shot the top score of the day for either school with a 43. Teammates Kelly Lungamer, Victoria Li and Macey Hudson all shot under 50 to give Marian a win on the par 36 course.

Cordelia Chan (45) and Grear Clawson (47) had solid rounds for Cranbrook.

The week didn’t improve for Cranbrook when it faced Farmington Hills Mercy, another top team in the area, at Walnut Creek Country Club. In a match that was shortened to seven holes because of rain, Mercy won 143 to 157.

The Marlins had three golfers shoot 35 and that was enough to win. Chan had another solid performance, leading all golfers with a 30.

Varsity Boys Soccer

Andover bounced back from a 2-1 loss to Royal Oak on Tuesday to pick up a solid 3-1 victory over Avondale on Thursday.

Second half goals from Nick Shabino and Jonah Yousif helped the Barons pull away from its OAA White Rival. Yousif added two assists in the game for the Barons.

Andover is now 2-3-2 on the season and 2-1 within its division. With three games next week, one against Berkley and two against Groves, it will have a chance to move to over .500 overall and up the white division leaderboard.
